In this study, we fully characterized the Dutch clinical isolate of APMV-1-like virus, determined its phylogenetic relationship to other APMV-1 strains, and correlated presence of this virus with lesions in tissues obtained from the patient at autopsy. Domestic pigeons were inoculated intratracheally with the Dutch clinical virus isolate to determine infectivity and transmissibility, clinical signs, and pathological changes (Supplementary Methods).
