Andronikos V Palaiologos was the only known son of Emperor John VII Palaiologos and Irene Gattilusio, daughter of Francesco II Gattilusio. At the time of his birth John VII was Regent of the Byzantine Empire for his uncle Manuel II Palaiologos.
