He was nominal co-emperor for 63 years, successively with his father; stepfather, Nikephoros II Phokas; uncle, John I Tzimiskes; and brother, Basil II. Constantine's father, Romanos II, was the sixth Byzantine emperor of the Macedonian dynasty.
