Details of his early life are sparse, except for his marriage to Egnatia Mariniana, with whom he had two sons: later emperor Publius Licinius Egnatius Gallienus and Licinius Valerianus.[4] Valerian's first act as emperor on October 22, 253, was to appoint his son Gallienus caesar.
