Calculations indicated that enrollment of 1000 subjects in each study was required to detect a 25% relative difference between treatment groups in the proportion of picornavirus-infected subjects reaching the primary end point (or an estimated 2-day difference in median time) with 90% power (2-sided test at the 5% level of significance [20] ).
