Using Zimbabwe as an example, we argue that the magnitude, and impact of the epidemic in most of sub-Saharan Africa is likely to be smaller than anticipated, with a reduced morbidity and mortality. This case strongly influenced the subsequent response to COVID-19 by both the government, and the private healthcare industry in Zimbabwe, and played a pivotal role in raising public awareness.
