Malaria remains a major threat, and NIAID conducts clinical, epidemiologic, drug, and vaccine research in east African countries such as Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda, and in Mali, Cameroon, Ghana, and The Gambia in central and West Africa. This study was successfully completed in 2005 and has provided data to show that serious infections and deaths can be prevented by the incorporation of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine into the local expanded program on immunization (EPI) (http://www3.niaid.nih.gov/research/topics/bacterial/ clinical/GambiaPneumococcalVaccineTrial.htm).
