Naked mole rats support the evolutionary theory of aging which posits that species that have evolved in areas of low extrinsic mortality such as thermally buffered, sealed burrows that are protected from predation will evolve mechanisms better-suited for extended tissue maintenance and concomitant longevity; whereas those species living in a dangerous environment fraught with challenging climatic conditions and/or high predation risk will evolve life history traits that facilitate early reproduction and shorter lifespans.
