As is likely with COVID-19, the outbreak of SARS (an earlier severe acute respiratory syndrome) in 2003 was the result of a coronavirus that originated in bats with subsequent infection of wild animals sold in live-animal street markets in China. The large-scale confinement of animals for human consumption has also played a major direct role in another ongoing health crisis in the USA and around the world -antibiotic resistance.
