Fang's online diaries presented an unwelcome challenge to the state narrative, which by this time was concentrated on promoting the triumphs of the Chinese government in winning the war against the virus and contrasting its success with its 'failing' Western counterparts who were presented as struggling ineffectually to combat the spread of the pandemic.
