As part of ongoing efforts to control the spread of infection, national and international guidance recommends active surveillance of asymptomatic close contacts of confirmed cases of COVID-19 [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] . However, evidence for the effectiveness of active surveillance systems among community-based close contacts of cases of COVID-19 has been limited to date. This study aimed to measure the effectiveness of an automated text-based active surveillance system which was used in Cork/ Kerry for the first 7 weeks of the COVID-19 response. In the first 7 weeks of the COVID-19 response in Cork/Kerry, 9.0% of close contacts who consented to participate in active surveillance were referred for testing and 2.6% tested positive for COVID-19.
