The three essential components that contribute to the barrier function of airway epithelium are: mucociliary escalators which trap and removes inhaled foreign particles from the airways, 32 intercellular tight and adherens junctions 33 that regulate epithelial paracellular permeability, and secreted antimicrobial products that kill inhaled pathogens.
