METHODS: The DESIRE trial was a multicenter randomized clinical trial in which adult patients with sepsis were sedated with (DEX group) or without (non-DEX group) dexmedetomidine while on mechanical ventilators. We analyzed data derived from a randomized clinical trial and found that the administration of dexmedetomidine to patients with sepsis on ventilators improved CRP and PCT levels during the first 14 days in the ICU. In the present study, the use of dexmedetomidine for sedation reduced both CRP and PCT levels in patients with sepsis.
