Published articles were searched for on electronic databases (Pubmed, Embase, Scopus, LILACS, African Index Medicus, Cochrane Library), using combinations of the following key words: ("surveillance" OR outbreak detection OR warning system) AND (overthe-counter OR "prescription drugs" OR pharmacy OR (pharmaceutical OR drug OR medication) sales).
