The examples of Tax and Hobs illustrate how binding of viral protein to cyclin or CDK promotes cell cycle progression either by enhancing kinase activity and/or weakening the inhibitory effect of CKI. Thus, by targeting the E3 ligase of p21 WAF1/CIP1 and p27 KIP1 for degradation, Tax stabilizes these two CKIs.
