In this paper, we describe ways in which models have influenced policy, from the early stages of the outbreak to the current date -and anticipate the future value of models in informing suppression efforts, vaccination programs and economic interventions. For COVID-19, strategies may differ between countries depending on the acuity of the epidemic, the age groups driving the infection or at higher risk for severe disease, and the age structure of the population.
