STUDY SELECTION: We included articles with patients in acute respiratory failure. Analogous communication problems exist with effective solutions in other fields, such as fighter pilot masks, that can be easily implemented to enhance noninvasive ventilation patient care, increase adherence to noninvasive ventilation treatment, and improve patient outcomes. W ith landmark trials demonstrating the efficacy of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in cardiogenic pulmonary edema and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, NIV has changed the standard of care for acute respiratory failure (ARF) and reduced the amount of invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) being used (1) (2) (3) (4) .
