CDC-based scientists have developed and used new technologies to identify outbreaks of disease in cooperation with state and local public health laboratories. The DOE national laboratories develop new technologies for countering biologic and chemical threats, including systems for the detection, modeling, and response to terrorist attacks (see www-ed.fnal.gov/doe/ doc_labs.html). Many state and locally operated laboratories in addition to clinical and public health laboratories produce test results that may be useful for surveillance. The mission of the LRN is "to maintain an integrated national and international network of laboratories that can respond quickly to acts of chemical or biological terrorism, emerging infectious diseases and other public health threats and emergencies."
