Whether cell-mediated effector mechanisms, mucosal antibody, or some other factor is primarily responsible for protection by live attenuated influenza vaccines or natural infection remains controversial despite several decades of study. A key finding has been that, among the neutralizing antibodies elicited in response to influenza virus, HIV, or RSV infection or immunization, some have remarkably broad specificity (Burton and Mascola 2015; Corti et al., 2013 Corti et al., , 2011 .
