Here, we hypothesised that some of the identified safe-in-human BSAs could possess novel antiviral activities and, therefore, could be used for treatment of many different viral infections. Fig. 1 shows BSAs and other approved antiviral drugs linked to viral and host targets through viruses they inhibit. Thus, we tested several known BSA agents against (−)ssRNA, (+) ssRNA, ssRNA-RT and dsDNA viruses and identified novel activities for dalbavancin against EV1, ezetimibe against ZIKV and HIV-1, as well as azacitidine, cyclosporine, minocycline, oritavancin and ritonavir against RVFV.
