John Hus: A Biography

In his book, John Hus' Concept of the Church, Professor Spinka ex-
amined the theology of Hus. In this biography he extends our under-
standing of the personality and work of the man he has characterized
as "essentially a reformer whose ideal was the pure church." The
study is based on new materials and on critical works about Hus
which have become available since 1915, the date of the last similar
study. Hus' writings in Latin and Czech have been abstracted,

A history of the Patriarchate of Constantinople from the eve of the
Turkish conquest to the Greek War of Independence.

The first part describes the organization of the church before
1453 and its relations with the Empire and with the Roman and other
churches. The second part—1453 to 1821—tells of the church's sub-
servience to the Turkish Sultans before it attained its ultimate posi-
tion as the focus of Greek nationalism. New material is presented on
relations between the Greek church and the Anglican, Calvinist and
Lutheran churches during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
