Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-24 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Size

There are 22 item(s) in this carrel, and this carrel is 788,695 words long. Each item in your study carrel is, on average, 35,849 words long. If you dig deeper, then you might want to save yourself some time by reading a shorter item. On the other hand, if your desire is for more detail, then you might consider reading a longer item. The following charts illustrate the overall size of the carrel.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

god, christ, will, shall, may, us, man, one, things, lord, yet, therefore, men, love, now, also, faith, good, life, great, first, world, much, hee, must, doth, death, time, many, let, made, without, spirit, make, heart, sin, self, grace, see, holy, every, come, jesus, though, church, ye, day, wee, true, soul

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are The true light shining in darkness and dispelling the mists of errour arising from the darkness of man''s heart, &c. promoted by the prince of darkness against the truth of God; in the matter of our justification: shewing, that by the deeds of the law, or mans own righteousness, no flesh can or shall be justified in the sight of God. The first part. By Tho. By [faded print] reverend and learned divine Mr. Theophilus Gale., and The genuine epistles of the apostolical fathers, S. Barnabas, S. Ignatius, S. Clement, S. Polycarp, the Shepherd of Hermas, and the matyrdoms of St. Ignatius and St. Polycarp, written by those who were present at their sufferings : being, together with the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament, a compleat collection of the most primitive antiquity for about CL years after Christ / translated and publish''d, with a large preliminary discourse relating to the several treaties here put together by W. Wake ....

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

jesus christ, let us, every one, holy ghost, english books, early english, must needs, lord jesus, ye shall, books online, god will, lord iesus, good things, christ jesus, many things, one another, every man, holy spirit, page images, text creation, creation partnership, tells us, holy scriptures, may bee, will make, saving faith, ye may, take heed, shall live, take away, iesus christ, right hand, like manner, new testament, every thing, blessed lord, may see, wee must, made manifest, will give, make us, holy men, learned men, man may, good works, one day, shall bee, commun faith, shall see, hee will

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are The true light shining in darkness and dispelling the mists of errour arising from the darkness of man''s heart, &c. promoted by the prince of darkness against the truth of God; in the matter of our justification: shewing, that by the deeds of the law, or mans own righteousness, no flesh can or shall be justified in the sight of God. The first part. By Tho. Taylor, the meanest and unworthiest of the servants and ministers of Jesus Christ; and now pastor to a small congregational church in Cambridge. Art thou a ruler in Israel and knowest not these things? Viz. The great errour in that which is called the Apostles creed And the reall truth of Jesus Christ his glorious conquering personall reigne on Earth, over the Devill, sin and death for one thousand yeares. With mans salvation by the free grace and favour of God and Jesus Christ. Laid open by him who heartily desires the manifestation of all the truths of God, and of Jesus Christ. And the utter excirpation of all the errours of men. William Farmer, Gent., and Mount-Orgueil: or Divine and profitable meditations raised from the contemplation of these three leaves of natures volume, 1. Rockes, 2. Seas, 3. Gardens, digested into three distinct poems. To which is prefixed, a poeticall description, of Mount-Orgueil Castle in the Isle of Jersy. By VVilliam Prynne, late exile, and close prisoner in the sayd Castle. A poem of The soules complaint against the body; and Comfortable cordialls against the discomforts of imprisonment, &c. are hereto annexed..

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Sets of keywords -- statistically significant words -- can be enumerated by comparing the relative frequency of words with the number of times the words appear in an entire corpus. Some of the most statistically significant keywords in the carrel include:

And now word clouds really begin to shine:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be god, and Mount-Orgueil: or Divine and profitable meditations raised from the contemplation of these three leaves of natures volume, 1. Rockes, 2. Seas, 3. Gardens, digested into three distinct poems. To which is prefixed, a poeticall description, of Mount-Orgueil Castle in the Isle of Jersy. By VVilliam Prynne, late exile, and close prisoner in the sayd Castle. A poem of The soules complaint against the body; and Comfortable cordialls against the discomforts of imprisonment, &c. are hereto annexed. is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. god - Mount-Orgueil: or Divine and profitable meditations raised from the contemplation of these three leaves of natures volume, 1. Rockes, 2.
  2. god - The genuine epistles of the apostolical fathers, S. Wake ...
  3. christ - Christ''s tears for Jerusalems unbelief and ruine Now humbly recommended to England''s consideration in this her day of tryal and danger. By [faded print] reverend and learned divine Mr. Theophilus Gale.

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. god, man, thou - Flores solitudinis certaine rare and elegant pieces, viz. ... / collected in his sicknesse and retirement by Henry Vaughan.
  2. god, shall, unto - The genuine epistles of the apostolical fathers, S. Wake ...
  3. christ, god, faith - Christ''s tears for Jerusalems unbelief and ruine Now humbly recommended to England''s consideration in this her day of tryal and danger. By [faded print] reverend and learned divine Mr. Theophilus Gale.
