Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-24 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

church, one, will, god, may, men, christ, us, churches, must, yet, communion, man, shall, things, another, many, power, love, much, make, true, say, good, great, therefore, now, spirit, first, peace, others, body, though, every, people, christian, way, world, thing, without, made, christians, faith, think, part, let, take, doth, government, necessary

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are The true and only way of concord of all the Christian churches the desirableness of it, and the detection of false dividing terms / opened by Richard Baxter., Irenicum, to the lovers of truth and peace heart-divisions opened in the causes and evils of them : with cautions that we may not be hurt by them, and endeavours to heal them / by Jeremiah Burroughes., and The way of true peace and unity in the true church of Christ in all humility and bowels of love presented to them / by William Dell..

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

one another, particular church, true church, let us, jesus christ, catholick church, one body, holy ghost, particular churches, every one, every man, universal church, one church, will never, english books, early english, must needs, christian church, amongst us, books online, will say, whole church, tell us, catholick communion, gods word, take heed, one spirit, much less, god will, true churches, christian world, page images, many things, text creation, creation partnership, men will, man may, godly men, tells us, men may, will make, church may, ipso facto, visible church, love one, one thing, one man, christian communion, christian religion, many churches

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are A briefe declaration of the universalitie of the Church of Christ, and the unitie of the Catholike faith professed therein delivered in a sermon before His Maiestie the 20th. of Iune 1624. at Wansted. By Iames Ussher, Bishop of Meath. An epistle for true love, unity, and order in the Church of Christ, against the spirit of discord, disorder and confusion &c. recommended to friends in truth, chiefly for the sake of the weak and unstable minded ... / by Anne Whitehead, Mary Elson., and The great necessity of unity and peace among all Protestants, and the bloody principles of the papists made manifest by the most eminently pious and learned Bishop Usher ....

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be church, and The way of true peace and unity in the true church of Christ in all humility and bowels of love presented to them / by William Dell. is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. church - The true and only way of concord of all the Christian churches the desirableness of it, and the detection of false dividing terms / opened by Richard Baxter.
  2. god - Irenicum, to the lovers of truth and peace heart-divisions opened in the causes and evils of them : with cautions that we may not be hurt by them, and endeavours to heal them / by Jeremiah Burroughes.
  3. church - The dangerous schismatick clearly detected and fully confuted for the saving of a distracted nation from that which would destroy Christian love and unity : occasioned by a resolver of three cases about church-communion / by Richard Baxter ...

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. church, god, men - The true and only way of concord of all the Christian churches the desirableness of it, and the detection of false dividing terms / opened by Richard Baxter.
  2. god, men, christ - Irenicum, to the lovers of truth and peace heart-divisions opened in the causes and evils of them : with cautions that we may not be hurt by them, and endeavours to heal them / by Jeremiah Burroughes.
  3. church, communion, churches - A seasonable vindication of the truly catholick doctrine of the Church of England in reply to Dr. Sherlock''s answer to Anonymus his three letters concerning church-communion.
  4. christ, church, body - A sermon preached to the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor, and Court of Aldermen of the city of London, at their anniversary meeting on Easter Monday April 1652, at the Spittle wherein the unity of the saints with Christ, the head, and especially with the church, the body, with the duties thence arising, are endeavoured to be cleared : tending to heale our rents and divisions / by Stephen Marshal ...
  5. reasoned, soundnesse, obtaine - Admirable and notable prophesies vttered in former times by 24. famous Romain-Catholickes, concerning the Church of Rome''s defection, tribulation, and reformation / written first in Latine, & now published in the English tongue, both by Iames Maxwell ...
