Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-24 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

god, christ, will, man, may, shall, one, must, faith, us, men, yet, things, first, good, life, lord, therefore, sin, grace, now, gods, spirit, come, great, church, say, saith, many, world, heart, make, made, doth, haue, law, word, much, also, death, time, vs, without, vnto, thing, holy, true, love, doe, sinne

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are A golden chaine: or The description of theologie containing the order of the causes of saluation and damnation, according to Gods word. A view whereof is to be seene in the table annexed. Hereunto is adioyned the order which M. Theodore Beza vsed in comforting afflicted consciences., Gospel remission, or, A treatise shewing that true blessedness consists in pardon of sin wherein is discovered the many Gospel mysteries therein contained, the glorious effects proceeding from it, the great mistakes made about it, the true signs and symptomes of it, the way and means to obtain it / by Jeremiah Burroughs ; being several sermons preached immediately after those of The evil of sin by the same author, and now published by Philip Nye ... [et al.], and The measures of Christian obedience, or, A discourse shewing what obedience is indispensably necessary to a regenerate state, and what defects are consistent with it, for the promotion of piety, and the peace of troubled consciences by John Kettlewell ....

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

holy ghost, jesus christ, great salvation, god will, iesus christ, roman non, vnto vs, early english, english books, man may, must needs, holy spirit, every one, let vs, let us, paul saith, gods word, eternall life, vnto god, christ iesus, books online, god doth, will make, euery man, two things, every man, ye shall, lord jesus, shall come, euery one, right hand, take heed, make us, will never, wee must, page images, last day, true faith, may see, set downe, one another, sauiour christ, god himselfe, creation partnership, text creation, christ jesus, shall never, life euerlasting, one thing, may bee

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are The sacred method of saving humane souls by Jesus Christ by Henry Hallywell ... The Jerusalem-sinner saved, or, Good news for the vilest of men being a help for despairing souls, shewing that Jesus Christ would have mercy in the first place offered to the biggest sinners / by John Bunyan., and The condemned mans reprieve, or Gods love-tokens, flowing in upon the heart of William Blake, a pentient sinner, giving him assurance of the pardon of his sins, and the enjoyment of eternall happinesse, through the merits of Christ his saviour. Recommended by him (being a condemned prisoner for man-slaughter within the statute) unto his sister, and bequeathed unto her as a legacy..

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be god, and The high-vvay to heauen: or, the doctrine of election, effectuall vocation, iustification, santification and eternall life Grounded vpon the holy Scriptures, confirmed by the testimonies of sundry iudicious and great diuines, ancient and moderne. Compiled by Thomas Tuke. is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. god - Gospel remission, or, A treatise shewing that true blessedness consists in pardon of sin wherein is discovered the many Gospel mysteries therein contained, the glorious effects proceeding from it, the great mistakes made about it, the true signs and symptomes of it, the way and means to obtain it / by Jeremiah Burroughs ; being several sermons preached immediately after those of The evil of sin by the same author, and now published by Philip Nye ... [et al.]
  2. god - A golden chaine: or The description of theologie containing the order of the causes of saluation and damnation, according to Gods word. A view whereof is to be seene in the table annexed. Hereunto is adioyned the order which M. Theodore Beza vsed in comforting afflicted consciences.
  3. god - Of faith necessary to salvation and of the necessary ground of faith salvifical whether this, alway, in every man, must be infallibility.

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. god, christ, thou - A sure guide to heaven, or, An earnest invitation to sinners to turn to God in order to their eternal salvation shewing the thoughtful sinner what he must do to be saved / by Joseph Alleine.
  2. god, christ, man - A golden chaine: or The description of theologie containing the order of the causes of saluation and damnation, according to Gods word. A view whereof is to be seene in the table annexed. Hereunto is adioyned the order which M. Theodore Beza vsed in comforting afflicted consciences.
  3. god, sin, shall - The measures of Christian obedience, or, A discourse shewing what obedience is indispensably necessary to a regenerate state, and what defects are consistent with it, for the promotion of piety, and the peace of troubled consciences by John Kettlewell ...
  4. god, christ, spirit - The saints desire, or, A cordiall for a fainting soule declaring that in Christs righteousnesse onely ... there is life, happiness, peace ... also the happy estate of a man in Christ ... / by Samuel Richardson.
  5. church, faith, non - Of faith necessary to salvation and of the necessary ground of faith salvifical whether this, alway, in every man, must be infallibility.
