Introduction

This is a Distant Reader "study carrel", a set of structured data intended to help the student, researcher, or scholar use & understand a corpus.

This study carrel was created on 2021-05-25 by Eric Morgan <emorgan@nd.edu>. The carrel was created using the Distant Reader zip2carrel process, and the input was a Zip file locally cached with the name input-file.zip. Documents in the Zip file have been saved in a cache, and each of them have been transformed & saved as a set of plain text files. All of the analysis -- "reading" -- has been done against these plain text files. For example, a short narrative report has been created. This Web page is a more verbose version of that report.

All study carrels are self-contained -- no Internet connection is necessary to use them. Download this carrel for offline reading. The carrel is made up of many subdirectories and data files. The manifest describes each one in greater detail.

Size

There are 5 item(s) in this carrel, and this carrel is 59,298 words long. Each item in your study carrel is, on average, 11,859 words long. If you dig deeper, then you might want to save yourself some time by reading a shorter item. On the other hand, if your desire is for more detail, then you might consider reading a longer item. The following charts illustrate the overall size of the carrel.

Word Frequencies

By merely counting & tabulating the frequency of individual words or phrases, you can begin to get an understanding of the carrel's "aboutness". Excluding "stop words", some of the more frequent words include:

christ, god, water, baptism, one, name, ye, power, now, iohn, will, say, spirit, holy, baptized, shall, come, lord, ghost, things, men, made, jesus, us, baptize, yet, may, man, therefore, mark, end, must, sent, saith, also, time, true, son, father, world, day, know, people, doth, great, life, many, light, first, bread

Using the three most frequent words, the three files containing all of those words the most are A treatise concerning baptism, and the Lord''s Supper shewing, that the true disciples of Christ are sent to baptize men into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for the carrying on of which, Christ is with them, and will be, to the end of the world : also, a few words concerning the Lord''s Supper, shewing that those that sup with him are in his kingdom., John Baptist''s decreasing and Christ''s increasing witnessed being a treatise concerning baptism in the type, and baptism in the mystery / by John Gratton ..., and Drinke and vvelcome: or The famous historie of the most part of drinks, in use now in the kingdomes of Great Brittaine and Ireland with an especiall declaration of the potency, vertue, and operation of our English ale. With a description of all sorts of waters, from the ocean sea, to the teares of a woman. As also, the causes of all sorts of weather, faire or foule ... Compiled first in the high Dutch tongue, by the painefull and industrious Huldricke Van Speagle, a grammaticall brewer of Lubeck, and now most learnedly enlarged, amplified, and translated into English prose and verse. By Iohn Taylor..

The most frequent two-word phrases (bigrams) include:

holy ghost, christ jesus, one spirit, ye shall, english books, early english, jesus christ, one baptism, made manifest, books online, one lord, one faith, one body, must needs, text creation, creation partnership, page images, takes away, let us, lord jesus, true light, will never, one another, represented either, image sets, characters represented, tcp schema, give place, concerning baptism, love one, go ye, shall never, treatise concerning, must decrease, saith christ, must increase, shall ye, new creatures, shall baptize, one word, mark ye, christ iesus, indeed baptize, mind ye, beloved son, unchangeable priesthood, true baptism, water baptism, fled away, unleavened bread

And the three file that use all of the three most frequent phrases are A treatise concerning baptism, and the Lord''s Supper shewing, that the true disciples of Christ are sent to baptize men into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for the carrying on of which, Christ is with them, and will be, to the end of the world : also, a few words concerning the Lord''s Supper, shewing that those that sup with him are in his kingdom. Dr. Peter''s judgment of Dullidge or Lewisham water, and A proclamation for the careful custody and well ordering of the new river brought from Chadwell and Amwell to the north parts of the city of London James R..

While often deemed superficial or sophomoric, rudimentary frequencies and their associated "word clouds" can be quite insightful:

Topic Modeling

Topic modeling is another popular approach to connoting the aboutness of a corpus. If the study carrel could be summed up in a single word, then that word might be christ, and Drinke and vvelcome: or The famous historie of the most part of drinks, in use now in the kingdomes of Great Brittaine and Ireland with an especiall declaration of the potency, vertue, and operation of our English ale. By Iohn Taylor. is most about that word.

If the study carrel could be summed up in three words ("topics") then those words and their significantly associated titles include:

  1. christ - A treatise concerning baptism, and the Lord''s Supper shewing, that the true disciples of Christ are sent to baptize men into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for the carrying on of which, Christ is with them, and will be, to the end of the world : also, a few words concerning the Lord''s Supper, shewing that those that sup with him are in his kingdom.
  2. ale - Drinke and vvelcome: or The famous historie of the most part of drinks, in use now in the kingdomes of Great Brittaine and Ireland with an especiall declaration of the potency, vertue, and operation of our English ale. By Iohn Taylor.
  3. text - Dr. Peter''s judgment of Dullidge or Lewisham water

If the study carrel could be summed up in five topics, and each topic were each denoted with three words, then those topics and their most significantly associated files would be:

  1. christ, god, unto - A treatise concerning baptism, and the Lord''s Supper shewing, that the true disciples of Christ are sent to baptize men into the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, for the carrying on of which, Christ is with them, and will be, to the end of the world : also, a few words concerning the Lord''s Supper, shewing that those that sup with him are in his kingdom.
  2. ale, water, doth - Drinke and vvelcome: or The famous historie of the most part of drinks, in use now in the kingdomes of Great Brittaine and Ireland with an especiall declaration of the potency, vertue, and operation of our English ale. By Iohn Taylor.
  3. text, tcp, water - Dr. Peter''s judgment of Dullidge or Lewisham water
