Smith K now ledge M anagem ent (KM) is o n e o f m any im portant topics being addressed b y com pa­ nies in today's com plex business environment. h as s p a w n e d a n e w leg io n o f consultants, it has provided a n e w direction for m any software com ­ p an ies, a n d it has g iv en p u rp o s e to m a n y te c h ­ nologies that previously a p p e a re d to b e only ex­ p ensive executive toys. H ow ever, KM is nothing new . It is a synthesis o f m an y ideas w h ich w h e n brought together create an exciting n e w paradigm o f research . KM is m u ltidisciplinary a n d d raw s from com m unications theory, organizational dy­ nam ics, a n d inform ation organization. KM incor­ porates th e concepts o f Senge’s Learning Organi­ zation, b u ild s o n th e fo u n d a tio n o f intellectual capital m anagem ent, an d draw s from business in­ te llig e n c e p ractices. The underlying goal o f KM is to use the know l­ e d g e e m b e d d e d in th e organization to m axim ize th e effectiveness an d com petitiveness o f th e co n ­ cern. This goal ap p ears m u ch to o sim ple to have s p a w n e d su c h a m assive m o v em en t. H ow ever, th e c u rren t b u sin ess en v iro n m e n t req u ires n e w practices to accom plish this fundam ental goal.
