GRANTS • The John Ben Snow Foundation has awarded a matching grant of $300,000 to S y r a c u s e U n i ­ v e r s i t y for the construction of facilities to house the university’s Audio Archives and Thomas Alva E d is o n R e -re c o rd in g L a b o ra to ry . T h e g ra n t, which will be given over a four-year period, m ust be m atc h ed by funds from o th e r sources. The A udio A rchives ho u se m ore th a n 200,000 disc records, 2,500 tapes, and 3,000 cylinders. • The New Jersey State L ibrary has awarded a grant of m ore than $5,000 to the R u t g e r s U n i ­ v e r s i t y Library C om puter C e n te r to support the d e v e lo p m e n t of a C o m p u te r O u tp u t M icrofilm Supplem ent to the Rutgers Union Catalog. • The B o s t o n T h e o l o g i c a l I n s t i t u t e (BTI), C am bridge, M assachusetts, an ecum enical con­ sortium of nine libraries, has received grants to ­ taling $66,000 from th e Lilly E n d o w m en t, the C ouncil on L ibrary R esources, and th e A rth u r Vining Davis Foundation. T hese grants will su p ­ p ort the first half of a two-year project to com ­ p lete the conversion of the B TI Union List o f Se­ ria ls to m a c h in e - r e a d a b le form th ro u g h th e CO N version of SERials Project (CONSER). • W h e a t o n C o l l e g e , N orton, M assachusetts, has received a $250,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, toward the construction of a m ajor addition to the library. W hen com pleted, the $2.8-million library a ddi­ tion will increase shelf space by 60 p e rce n t (in u n d e r g r o u n d c o n s tr u c tio n d e s ig n e d fo r low energy use) and greatly increase study space for students and faculty. W heaton College has also re ce iv e d a $20,000 g rant from th e C harles E. M errill T rust for library acquisitions. • T he U.S. Office of Education has awarded an E thnic H eritage Studies grant of almost $50,000 to the G eneral L ibraries at th e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s a t A u s t i n . T he g rant will b e used for a project en title d “Archives and Textbooks, A New Lease on L ife.” The purpose of the project is to im prove th e availability of M exican A m erican prim ary sources, p artic u la rly to textbook w riters and curriculum developers. • T he Joel E. F e rris F o u n d a tio n , Spokane, W ashington, has a w ard e d a g ra n t of $5,204 to W h it m a n C o l l e g e , Walla Walla, W ashington, to support the work of th e N orthw est Archival Col­ lection project at the Penrose M emorial Library. The grant will b e used for the purchase of mi­ crofilms of regional papers of the late nin ete en th cen tu ry , re p ro d u c tio n of p h otographs, and the p u rc h a s e o f s u p p lie s a n d e q u ip m e n t for th e p ro p e r storage of archival materials.
