The study will be conducted by Batelle-C olum bus Laboratories, an Ohio research institute. T he new study will investigate the impact of linking bibliographic utilities on libraries, library users, brokers of bibliographic services, and the utilities themselves. It will focus on the potential co sts and b e n e fits o f linkage in th e areas of cooperative cataloging, interlibrary loan, and on line reference searching. T he six-month study will also analyze the alter native methods of linking networks and will de velop a model for creating a nationwide network. D a ta for th e study w ill b e a c q u ire d from O C L C , the Research Libraries Information Net work (R L IN , the network arm of the Research Libraries Group), the Washington Library N et work (W LN), and the Library of Congress. T h e study rep resen ts a step forward in the Council on Library Resources’ Bibliographic Se r vice Development Program. The premise of this program is that national networking should be based on orderly national planning and coordina tion rather than on ad hoc arrangements. It re mains to be seen how central planning will fit in with the competitive situation that now exists in the network field. ■■ Role of Librarians in Curriculum Planning Information is needed on the participation of academic librarians in campus curriculum planning and developm ent (e .g ., service on curriculum com m ittees, power to accept or veto new course proposals, etc.).
