ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries 406 / C & R L New s News from the Field Acquisitions • The Library of Congress has acquired a collec- tion of m ore th a n 20,000 early NBC television p ro ­ grams. O n the occasion of its 60th anniversary, the netw ork donated to the lib rary its entire collection of television program s covering the period from 1948 to 1977. T he program s w ere preserved on Kinescope and film , and the lib rary will transfer them to videotape. Together w ith the NBC Badio C ollection, consisting of 80,000 hours of program s from th e years 1926 to 1970 w hich the netw ork do­ nated in 1978, the L ib rary of Congress now owns th e largest archive of b ro ad castin g av ailab le to scholars and researchers in the nation. T he collec­ tion, nearly half of w hich represents th e years of live TV, 1948-1960, preserves the televised w ork of great com edians of th a t era, including Jack Benny, Steve A llen, Jim m y D u ra n te , E d W y n n , E rn ie Kovacs, F red Allen, Bert L ah r, G roucho M arx, Sid C aesar, M ilton Berle, Bob Hope, and E ddie C a n ­ tor, as well as such new er com edians as Mike N ich­ ols an d E lain e M ay, F lip W ilson, an d R ich ard Pryor. Among the concert artists are A rturo Tos­ c a n i n i, J a s c h a H e if e tz , E z io P in z a , R ic h a r d T ucker, an d Jo an S u th erlan d . P o p u lar m usical stars represented include F red Astaire, F ran k Sina­ tra , E th el M erm an , G ene Kelly, M ary M artin , Bing C ro sb y , A ndy W illiam s, Ju lie A n d rew s, H arry Belafonte, and others. T he collection, s ta rt­ ing w ith the presidency of H arry T ru m a n , covers the eras of E leanor Roosevelt, the K orean W ar, Jo­ seph M cC arthy, N ikita Krushchev, M artin L u th er King J r., the V ietnam W ar, and the first space shots. T here is full coverage of th e adm inistrations of Presidents E isenhow er, Kennedy (including all of the Kennedy press conferences), Johnson, and Nixon, as well as the n ational conventions and elec­ tions of th e period. T he NBC gift will be in the cus­ tody of L C ’s M otion P icture, B roadcasting and Re­ corded Sound Division to be preserved, cataloged and m ade accessible for research and scholarship, and will becom e p a rt of a collection w hich totals m ore th a n 2 million items d atin g from 1879. The collection is being p rep ared for shipm ent to the L i­ b rary of Congress. D elivery will begin in July. • Sarah Lawrence C ollege’s E sth er R aushen- bush L ib rary , Bronxville, New York, has received the B enjam in and Celia C loth Collection of prole­ ta ria n literatu re. T he set of 54 volumes of “social fic tio n ” w as given to th e college by B arry D. M aurer, W est O range, New Jersey. T he collection was assembled along the lines set out in W alter Ri­ d e o u t’s The R adical N o vel in the U nited States 1 9 0 0 -1 9 5 4 , (C a m b rid g e : H a r v a r d U n iv e rsity Press, 1956) and concentrates on “the u rb an , im m i­ g ran t scene.” Almost all the books are first editions, m any w ith dust jackets in fine condition. U pton S in c la ir, V id a S cu d d e r, A lb ert M a ltz , D a lto n T ru m b o and A lbert H alper are am ong the authors included. T he collection is on display in the library d u rin g June and then will be housed w ith the li­ b rary Special Collections. • T h e S o u th w estern U n iv ersity L i b r a r y , G eorgetow n, Texas, has acquired the papers of B ertha McKee D obie, wife of Texas w riter J. F rank Dobie. T he collection contains letters and personal p a p e rs, in c lu d in g c o rre sp o n d e n c e w ith fo rm e r U.S. President L yndon B. and L ady Bird Johnson, and w ith El Paso w riter-artist Tom Lea. D obie and her husband w ere both 1910 graduates of South­ w estern. • T he State University of New York at Buffalo’s History of M edicine Collection has received a col­ lection on gout and rheum atism , d onated by L. Maxwell Lockie, M .D ., class of 1929, w ho retired in 1985 after 52 years of practice. Lockie, an in ter­ nationally know n specialist in arth ritis, has a u ­ thored m ore th a n 150 papers on the subject, and his p riv a te lib ra ry on gout an d rh eu m a tism is th e result of years of collecting original source m a te ­ rial. T he donation consists of 14 titles published in th e 18th century, including works by W illiam Ca- dogan, G eorge C heyne, and T hom as Sydenham , who described the acute gouty attack. These works are augm ented by m ore th a n 100 titles from the 19th and 20th centuries, and by journals. • T he Temple University Libraries, Philadel- p h ia, have acquired th e historical records of the O p p o rtu n itie s In d u stria liz a tio n C enters (O IC ). Founded in 1964, O IC is the largest non-profit n et­ w ork of em ploym ent train in g centers in the U nited States. Included in its collection are m inutes from staff and b o ard m eetings, correspondence, films, tapes, publications, position papers, and confer­ ence proceedings. T he collection provides in fo rm a­ tion on grassroots leadership, race relations, h u ­ m an resource developm ent, and m anagem ent and em ployee training. O IC has received a g ran t from th e Pew M em orial T rust to begin the transferral of the m aterials to Tem ple. Of special interest is a French E m p ire clock u n d e r glass th a t a p p a re n tly was given to Jenny Lind by P.T . Barnum . The collec­ tion was bequeathed to Tufts from the estate of Henry Y. Porter, who had been an accountant for the University. Grants • Baruch College, the City University of New York, has received a tw o-year $119,647 NEH grant to produce a m achine-readable database th a t will en ab le m usicians an d m usical scholars to find pieces of music contained in the standard editions of music com monly known as D enkm äler and Ge­ sam tausgaben. A group of senior editors will super­ vise the collection of d ata from the editions on m i­ crocom puters in a num ber of research libraries. The work has been divided into two parts: produc­ tion of a bibliography (eventually to replace Anna H arriet H eyer’s Historical Sets, Collected Editions, and M onum ents o f Music), and a database th a t can be searched on various param eters of interest to scholars and musicians (including composers and/ or titles, perform ing m edia, durations, genres, and false or conflicting attrib u tio n s). Initially the bibli­ ography will be published in book form and the in­ dexes will be available on m icroform , b u t it is hoped th a t the database will eventually be m ade available for com puter searching. • Luther College, D ec o ra h , Io w a , has been aw arded a $1 million endow m ent grant from the G ardner and Florence Call Cowles Foundation, Des Moines. The grant is the largest gift in the his­ tory of the college. The college has four years in w hich to m atch the aw ard. L uther began a drive in 1983 to raise $10.5 million in endow m ent funds. The Cowles aw ard pushes the total received so far in cash, pledges and deferred gifts to $9 million. The college’s total endow m ent now stands at $11 million, com pared to $2 million in 1978. • The New York University Libraries have re- ceived a $1 million grant from the Pew M emorial T rust to develop a prototype interconnected infor­ m ation system for libraries. The grant will be used to test a new application of standard telecom m uni­ cations protocols using the Open Systems Intercon­ nection reference model form ulated by the In te r­ national Standards O rganization (ISO/OSI). The model, w hich allows dissimilar com puter systems to com m unicate and exchange inform ation, will be used to link NYU's local com puterized library sys­ tem w ith the Research L ibrary Inform ation N et­ work (RLIN)—the bibliographic utility of the Re­ search L ib raries G ro u p (R LG ). T he ISO /O SI model is currently being used by the Linked Sys­ tems Project (LSP) to exchange authority records between RLG and the L ibrary of Congress. • The Northeast Document Conservation Cen- ter (N E D C C ), Andover, M assachusetts, has re­ ceived a $370,000 NEH grant to continue the activ­ ities of its field service program and to increase the capacity of its preservation microfilm ing service. T he g ran t m ust be m atch ed in p a rt from other sources. N ED C C is a non-profit, regional conser­ vation center, specializing in the treatm en t of li­ brary and archival m aterials in the collections of li­ braries, historical organizations and museums. The funds will also be used to purchase m icrofilm ­ ing equipm ent in order to expand the ou tp u t of the C enter’s preservation m icrofilm ing service. • The University of California Library System has received a three-year, $521,000 grant from the N ational L ib rary of M edicine. T he university’s Medical L ibrary Resource G rant Project will add the national lib rary ’s M ED LIN E database to U C ’s MELVYL online library catalog. M ED LIN E is a p rim a ry source of in fo rm a tio n in th e life and health sciences for research, teaching, and patient care. The M ELV Y L/M ED LIN E Project will be accomplished as a joint effort of the Division of L i­ brary A utom ation at the Office of the President and UC health sciences libraries. • The University of Texas at Austin Libraries have received a $98,200 N EH g ran t to catalog m ore th an 4,000 newspapers, including both Texas and other U.S. papers. The cataloging effort is p art of the Texas Newspaper Project, w hich is p a rt of th e la rg e r U .S. N a tio n a l N e w sp a p e r P ro je c t. UTA’s efforts will be centered in the university’s Barker Texas History C enter. The earliest paper held by the center is the Texas Gazette, published in 1829 in Brazoria. ■ ■ Employee Assistance Programs Two librarians at Texas Tech are studying how academ ic libraries have utilized Employee Assistance P rogram s in resolving personnel m atters in the library.
