There are days I have more deadlines than I want to think about—and I am sure that you do, too. But there are notices of so many deadlines in this issue that I want to make sure you don’t miss them. • December 1. Applications/nominations due for ACRL awards (page 886). • D ecem ber 1. Proposals for leading roundtable discussions at the ACRL 10th Na tional Conference due (page 887). • December 6. Applications/nominations due for the position of editor of C ollege & R e sea rch L ib raries (page 936). • December 15. Applications due for ACRL 10th National Conference scholarships (page 886). • December 15. Applications due for ACRL’s Institute for Information Literacy Immersion program (page 910). So please be sure to check out this diverse array of opportunities and don’t let these dead lines slip by! Ever wonder how those “millionth” com memorative volumes get selected and pur chased? Anthony Bliss shares the inside ac count o f how the University of California, Ber keley, selected its 9-millionth book and pur chased it at an auction (page 890). While commemorative purchases often look to the past, it is important for us to keep focus ing on the future. Carla Stoffle (with colleagues Barbara Allen and Janet Fore) and Emily Mobley look at the future of academic librarianship and the trends that will affect them (page 894). As we look to the future, we must con sider our own responsibility for preparing for it. Take a moment to review the new ACRL Statement on Professional Development that exhorts us to strive for professional excel lence through rigorous programs of lifelong learning and professional growth (page 933). — Mary Ellen K.
