O ’ N e i l l , information scien tist from the State University o f New York at Buffalo, as Visiting Distinguished Scholar at O C L C . Dr. O’Neill is the first to hold the newly created post that annually will bring scientists to O C L C to conduct research in such fields as library science, computer science, applied mathematics, and in­ dustrial psychology. Dr. O ’Neill will begin his one-year appoint­ ment at O C L C in Columbus in Septem ber. He is on leave from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he is associate professor in the School of Information and Library Studies and ad­ ju n ct associate professor of industrial engineering. He received his P h.D . in applied operations re­ search and his master of science in industrial en­ gineering from Purdue University. As O C L C Distinguished Scholar Dr. O ’Neill intends to conduct research focusing on subject a c c e s s to la rg e o n -lin e d ata b ases such as O C L C ’s. “W e want to explore ways to get usable quantities of data with subject access,” says Dr. O’Neill. “And the combination o f computers, data base, and staff talent make O C L C an attractive choice for a sabbatical.’’ O C LC has six Xerox Sigma 9 computers, ten D -116 m in icom puters, and two Tandem D/16 com pu ters at its cen tral facility in C olum bus. Users at more than 2 ,2 0 0 rem ote terminals access O C L C ’s data base (about four-billion words) via dedicated, leased telephone lines. O C L C ’s Visiting D istinguished Scholar Pro­ gram is a twelve-month program. The appointee must have a Ph .D . degree or equivalent training and substantial experience in directing and con­ ducting research in fields of interest to O C LC . The Visiting Scholar conducts research independ­ ently with no managerial or administrative duties, but is expected to interact closely with O C L C staff. R o n a l d E . D i e n e r has be en appointed the first executive director of O H IO N E T. D iener is currently head of the Office for Systems Planning and Research at Harvard University Library. His educational background includes an A .B . from N o rth w e ste rn C o lle g e ; A .M ., U n iv e r s ity o f Missouri (C olum bia); B .D ./ M .D iv ., Concordia Seminary; and an M .S ., Library Science, Univer­ sity o f Illinois (Urbana). In N ovem ber he will complete his T h .D . work at Harvard University, Divinity School. In his present position, D iener is the adminis­ trative officer for university-wide computer sup­ port systems at Harvard where such programs re­ sid e as C A P S , M C S S , H U L / C O N S E R , T h e W idener Shelflist Project, and the W idener C ir­ culation System. Previous positions include plan­ ning officer for cooperative activities in the Har­ vard U n iv e r sity L ib r a r y ; lib r a r ia n , B o ston Theological In stitu te; and executive d irector of the C enter for Reformation Research. F e r r a n c , form er media services librarian and instructor o f library scien ce with Newberry College, South Carolina, was recently appointed the director o f the Learning Resources C e n te r and assistant professor o f librarianship w ith the U n iv e r s ity o f New M e x ic o -G a llu p Branch. W hile with Newberry College, he, along with his other duties, was the coordinator of a H E W Title I Program IM PA CT Grant which in­ vestigated problems of the senior citizen in a se­ ries o f videotape presentations, wrote an HEA T itle V I-A G rant proposal for a closed circu it television distribution system, and developed an intercollegiate soccer program. He also served on the Advisory Board for the South Carolina Lung Association-Area Six Branch, and was active in the Jaycees and the South Carolina High School League as a basketball and baseball official. A native o f Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ferrang received his B .S. degree in education majoring in library science and secondary social studies from Edinboro State C ollege, Pennsylvania, in 1972, and the master’s degree in library science from the University o f Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Library and Inform ation Scien ces in 1976. He also attended Newberry College and the Univer­ sity of South Carolina’s Graduate School of Busi­ ness A d m inistratio n .
