David Farneth, director o f the W eill-Lenya Research Center in N ew York City, is the new editor o f the Music Library Association’s Index/ Bibliography Series. Farneth currently edits the Kurt Weill Newsletter, writes a column for Metrobeat, and has written ar­ ticles and compiled bibliographies on Kurt Weill and La Monte Young. Evan Ira Farber, Earlham College librarian emeritus, was awarded an honorary doctorate o f letters by Indiana Uni­ versity East in Richmond during commencement ceremonies in May. Dur­ ing his 32 years as chief librarian at Earlham, Farber shared the full re­ sources o f the Earlham library with IU East stu­ dents and faculty. He also advised the IU East administration and fac­ Evan Ira Farber ulty on building a stu- dent-friendly library when IU East moved to its own campus. Farber served as president o f ACRL in 1978– 79. He received ACRL’s Aca­ demic/Research Librarian o f the Year Award in 1980 and the Miriam Dudley Bibliographic In­ struction Librarian Award in 1987. Ernie Ingles, chief librarian and executive di­ rector o f learning systems at the University o f Alberta, has received the 1996 President’s Award o f the Library Association o f Alberta in recog­ nition o f his outstanding contributions to the library community. Ingles was honored particu­ larly for his work in the creation and direction both o f the NEOS Library Consortium o f more than 20 institutions in the Edmonton area, and o f the Alberta Library initiative (a.k.a. Libraries A.S.A.P.), which is working to create the Al­ berta Library, a multitype li­ brary consortium intended to provide equal access to information throughout the Province o f Alberta. Donald A. B. Lindberg, di­ rector o f the National Library o f M edicine (N LM ) since 1985, has w o n a Silver Award from the U.S. Na­ tional Commission on Li­ braries and Information Sci­ ence (NCLIS). As part o f its 25th anniversary celebration, the commission chose 25 Silver Award win­ ners to honor individuals with noteworthy and sustained contributions to libraries and infor­ mation services at the national, state, and/or local levels. Lindberg is recognized as one o f the world’s leading figures in biomedical com­ munication. His nominator noted that he has led the NLM in improvements that are contrib­ uting to faster and more accurate diagnosis, treatment, and prevention o f illness. Judith J. Field, a senior lecturer in the Wayne State University Library and Information Science Program, was recently e le c te d the 1996-97 president-elect o f the Special Libraries Associa­ tion (SLA). F ield has been a full-time faculty member at Wayne State since 1991. She has been involved in SLA for 24 years, and has held lead­ ership positions at both the chapter and division Judith J. Field levels. In 1994 she was named an SLA Fellow, one o f the association’s highest honors. Charles R. McClure, distinguished professor at Syracuse University’s School o f Information Studies, was honored in May by the Graduate Alumni o f the Rutgers University School o f Communication, Information, and Library Stud­ ies as the 1996 recipient o f its annual Distin­ guished Alumnus Award. The award cites McClure’s achievements as researcher, educa­ tor, scholar, and librarian, and the impact on July/August 1996/457 librarianship o f his record o f publication, which includes more than 25 books and hundreds o f articles, papers, and reports. Philip Schreur, head o f music technical ser­ vices at Stanford University Music Libraries, is the new editor o f the Music Library Association’s Music Cataloging Bulletin. Schreur received the LAUC-D Research Award in 1989; the Ingolf Dahl Memorial Award in Musicology in 1986; a Newberry Library Fellowship in 1984; and a full Fellowship at Stanford University from 1981 to 1985. Thomas J. Waldhart, professor in the School o f Library and Information Science at the Uni­ versity o f Kentucky, received the 1996 Helen M. Eckard Award from the Federal-State Coop­ erative System (FSCS) for Public Library Data, a joint program o f the National Center for Edu­ cation Statistics and the U.S. National Commis­ sion on Libraries and Information Science. The award honors innovative and exemplary uses o f national public library statistics. Waldhart was cited for his landmark study “Resource Sharing by Public Libraries,” which was published in the July/August 1995 issue o f P u b lic Libraries and responds to Thomas Ballard’s claim that public library expenditures on networking have been a poor investment. Diane Parr Walker, music librarian and coor­ dinator for the Fine Arts, Music, and Education Libraries at the University o f Virginia, is the new vice-president/president-elect o f the Music Li­ brary Association (MLA). Bonna Boettcher, head o f the Music Library and Sound Record­ ings Archives at Bowling Green State Univer­ sity, is the new executive secretary. And the three new members-at-large are Mimi Tashiro, music bibliographer and assistant head o f the Stanford University Music Library; Calvin Elliker, head o f the Music Library at the Uni­ versity o f Michigan; and Marjorie Hassen, head o f the Music Library at the University o f Pennsylvania. Appointments George M. Needham, executive director o f the Public Library Association (PLA), a division o f ALA, has been appointed state librarian for Michigan by the Legislative Council. Before join­ ing PLA in 1993, Needham served as director o f member services for the Ohio Library Asso­ ciation (1990– 92), director o f the Fairfield County District Library in Lancaster, O hio (1984– 89), and in numerous positions with the Charleston County Library in South Carolina (1977–84). He received his B.A. and MLS de­ grees from the State University o f N ew York at Buffalo in 1976 and 1977. In 1985 he received a certificate in the Advanced Library Manage­ ment Program at Miami University in Ohio. Jane Richards has been appointed library di­ rector at Wesleyan Col­ lege in Macon, Georgia. Before that appointment, she served as administra­ tive librarian for automa­ tion and technical ser­ v ic e s at the D e K a lb County Public Library in Georgia; as head o f tech­ nical services at the At­ lanta campus o f Mercer University; as head o f Jane Richards tech n ica l serv ic e s at Clayton State College; and as catalog librarian at Georgia State University. William A. Richards has been promoted to executive director o f in­ form ation services at G e o rg ia C o lle g e in Milledgeville due to a re­ organization that consoli­ dated Com puting Ser­ vices, Media Services, Libraries, and Institu­ tio n a l P la n n in g and Policy Analysis within a new department called Information Services. Michael York has been named director o f the Susan Colgate Cleveland Library-Learning Cen­ ter at Colby-Sawyer College in N ew London, N ew Hampshire. York most recently served as library director at the University o f N ew Hamp­ shire (UNH)-Manchester. Before that he served as interim university librarian at UNH-Durham, and in library positions at Castleton State Col­ lege and Ithaca College. Retirements William Abrams, serials cataloger at Portland State University, retired June 30. Abrams had been in charge o f serials cataloging since 1962. Martha J. Bailey recently retired as professor o f library science and life sciences librarian at the Purdue University Libraries after 25 years o f service. Before joining Purdue, Bailey worked as a librarian for Union Carbide Corp. and for E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. Joan Carruthers will retire this summer from York University where she has served since 1966 in positions o f reference librarian and bib­ liographer, head o f Scott Library reference, and assistant director for Scott Library. Judith Hardy will retire this summer from York University where she was a member o f the origi­ nal library staff on the Glendon campus. She left the libraries briefly in the ’60s and returned in 1967 to serve as reference librarian and so­ July/August 1996/459 cial sciences bibliographer for psychology, so­ ciology, and anthropology. Stanley M. McDonald Jr. retired at the end o f May after 25 years as director o f library ser­ vices at Framingham State College in Massa­ chusetts. McDonald began his career in the Concord (M A) Free Library in 1960, then served as reference librarian and assistant director o f the Wellesley (M A) Free Library through 1970. He has also pursued a career as a jazz musi­ cian and is considered a leading exponent of the late master o f the soprano saxophone, Sid­ ney Bechet. Eldon Tamblyn, head cataloger at Portland State University’s Branford Price Millar Library since 1967, retired in early June. Tamblyn be­ gan his career in 1961 as a cataloger at the Univer­ sity o f North Carolina, then served as a librar­ ian there. In 1962 he joined Duke University as Slavic cataloger, then became head Slavic cata­ loger at Stanford Univer­ sity in 1964. As head Eldon Tamblyn c a taloger at Portland State, he guided the Cataloging Section through many major changes, including the adoption o f the Western Library network bibliographic utility. Tamblyn voluntarily indexed C&RL and C&RL News for ACRL from 1975 to 1995. In June 1995 the ACRL Board issued a resolution hon­ oring Tamblyn’s efforts, saying, in part: “the members o f ACRL recognize his significant con­ tribution in providing access to C&RL and C&RL News; and express their deepest appreciation for his extraordinary service.” Deaths Myrle Bogle, director o f library services at San Juan College (SJC) in Farmington, New Mexico, died suddenly in her home in early January. B ogle joined SJC in 1993 after serving at Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas. She received her B.A. from the College o f Idaho in 1968 and her MLS from Texas Woman’s Uni­ versity in 1988. Edwin R. Harris, recently appointed dean of library and instructional services at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan, died May 16 from heart disease. He was 51. Harris joined Ferris’ staff in 1989 as department head o f li­ brary systems and operations and served as acting dean since 1994. A member o f ALA, Harris was also a member o f the American Society for Information Science and the Michigan Library Association. Arlene Tichy Mosel Thomas, librarian and author o f children’s books, died May 15 at the age o f 74. A librarian and associate professor emeritus at Case Western Reserve University School o f Library Science, Thomas was the au­ thor o f Tikki Tikki Tembo and The Funny Little Woman, a 1973 winner o f the Caldecott Medal for illustrators o f children’s books and an honor book in the Hans Christian Andersen interna­ tional children’s series. Dennis V. Thomison, associate professor of librarianship and reference librarian at the Uni­ versity o f Southern California’s (USC) Doheny Reference Center, died April 12 o f AIDS com­ plications. He was 59. Thomison received a B.A. in history from the University o f Wisconsin, Eau Clair in 1960 and a Ph.D. in library science from USC in 1973. He was the author o f many books including The Black Artist in America: A n In ­ dex to Reproductions (1991).
