ACRL News Issue (B) of College & Research Libraries NEWS No. 1, January 1969 ACRL News Issue (A) of College & Research Libraries, Vol. 30, No. 1 To combat misrepresentation of Ameri can Library Association “approval” or “recommendation” of publications or lists of publications, the Association has is sued a statement on “Use of the ALA Name.” The statement notes that ALA is “se riously concerned about the widespread misuse of its name,” and describes steps being taken to correct this. The complete statement follows. U s e o f t h e ALA N a m e It has come to the attention of the American Library Association that various publishers and distributors have stated that certain of their publications or lists of publications have been “approved” or “rec ommended” by the Association. In every instance in which such rep resentation is made, librarians or school administrators should insist that the pub lisher identify the issue of an Association publication or the book in which the al leged “approval” or “recommendation” ap peared. Librarians should also determine whether the publication reviewed by the Association is identical to the publication which is the subject of the representation. If it is not identical, any representation concerning ALA “recommendation” or “ap proval” is p er se a misrepresentation. The American Library Association is se riously concerned about the widespread misuse of its name and has adopted a com prehensive program to combat such misuse by legal and other procedures. As part of this program librarians are requested to send copies of commercial advertisements, brochures, and promotional materials in which reference to American Library As sociation “approval,” “review,” or “recom mendation” is included to Mr. William Rut ter, American Library Association, 50 East Huron Street, Chicago, Illinois 60611. The Association will shortly publish a comprehensive statement describing its various reviewing functions and their rel evance to book purchasing or leasing de cision making.
