H e b eg a n w o r k in g in the Catalog D ivision in Bancroft in 1972 and e v e n tually h ea d ed up its c o p y cata login g unit. In the 1980s, H o y e r c o n c e iv e d and m a n a ged a plan to accom plish a retrospective c o n v e r sion o f B a n croft’s entire card file o f printed materials. H e secu red grant fu n d in g fo r a three-year project to con vert the manuscript collections card file to an o n lin e system. At the national level, H o y e r w as in v o lv e d in the d e v e lo p m e n t o f the E n co d ed Archival D e scription, w h ich has b e e n a d o p te d b y the Li brary o f Congress as a national standard fo r the m ach in e-readable description o f archival collection s and serves as the basis fo r the u n iv e rs ity ’s O n lin e A r c h iv e o f C a liforn ia. Som e o f his oth er grant-writing includes: the California H e rita g e p roject to d ig itize and mount 25,000 images; the Finding Aids project to m ount the UC system ’s fin d in g aids fo r manuscript and other collections on the W eb; and he sought fu n d in g to create a fin d in g aid for the 400,000 negatives o f the San F ra n cisco C a ll n e w s p a p e r’s ph otograph ic morgue. Synnatzschke-Cochran w as a m e m b er o f A C R L ’s W estern E uropean Specialists Section, p revio u sly servin g on the Research and Planning subcom m ittee. She w a s also an active m e m b e r o f the O n lin e A u d io visu a l C a t a l o g e r s a n d V e r e i n D e u t s c h e r B ibliothekare, G erm any. D avid Dickey, director o f the Z o n d erva n Li brary at T a y lo r University in Upland, In d i ana, d ied March 24. A 1965 graduate o f T a y lor, D ic k e y had b e e n e m p lo y e d at T a y lo r since 1972. H e w as active in the leadership o f the Private A c a d e m ic Library N e tw o r k o f Indiana (P A L N I). B esides his p rofession al ac tivities as a librarian, D ic k e y had an avid in­ terest in the fin e and p erfo rm in g arts and in state and local history. H e w as an orga n izin g m e m b e r o f the U p la n d H istorical Society. D ic k e y recently traveled to Austria, w h e r e he taught a course o n m ajor m o tio n pictures film ed in the Salzburg, Austria, area. ■
