As the holidays quickly approach I realize that 
the end of the year is once again close at hand. At 
this time of year we are encouraged to reflect on 
where we have been and where we want to go.

ACRL takes the time to do just that with its 
1997-98 Annual Report on pages 853-877. Of­
ficers W. Lee Hisle and Maureen Sullivan share 
with us their reflections on the year, Executive 
Director Althea Jenkins reviews for us ACRL’s 
many accomplishments, and Budget & Finance 
Chair Ray English gives us the financial report.

I encourage you to take a few moments to 
review the annual report and see what ACRL has 
been able to accomplish through the efforts of its 
many dedicated volunteers.

Other ACRL business in this issue includes a 
report from President Maureen Sullivan on her 
initiatives (page 838), the slate of candidates for 
the spring 1999 elections (page 844), and the list

o f ACRL meetings taking place at the ALA Mid­
winter Meeting in Philadelphia (page 879).

Also in this issue, Bill Kane gives us an over­
view of the wonderful library community avail­
able to us when we visit Detroit for ACRL’s 9th 
National Conference, April 8-11,1999 (page 848).

Martin Goldberg and Susan Hamburger tell us 
about the exciting diversity conference they at­
tended (page 840). The responses to the opening 
question asked of the audience (Suppose you were 
on a sinking boat with your spouse/partner, your 
mother, and your child. As the only swimmer, 
whom would you choose to save?) are an illumi­
nating and thought-provoking illustration of cul­
tural diversity.

I wish you all the best for this holiday season 
and hope that you have fun and find some time 
for quiet reflection.
