A u d r e e M a l k i n , head of the Theater Arts L i ­ brary at the University of California, Los Angeles, retired in October after 30 years of service. Malkin began her career in 1956 as a library assistant in the music library and was appointed head of the T h e ­ ater Arts Library in 1970. W . R o b e r t P o l l a r d , head of reference at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, retired F e b ru ­ ary 29, 1986. Pollard joined the library in 1965 as assistant catalog librarian and becam e head of ref­ erence in 1971. M a r g a r e t S t e c k e n r e i t e r , associate archivist in the University Archives (Special Collections D e ­ partment) at the University of W aterloo, Ontario, will retire at the end of this year after 23 years of service. Steckenreiter began her career at the Uni­ versity in 1963, becoming assistant to the archivist in 1977 and later associate archivist. Deaths H u g h C r a i g A t k i n s o n , director of the Univer­ sity of Illinois Libraries, U rbana-C ham paign, died October 24 at age 52. Atkinson, who had been di­ rector for 10 years, pre­ sided over the com put­ erization of the library’s card c a ta lo g , the c o n ­ struction of the $ 6 .7 m il­ lion sixth stack addition, and, most recently, the a c q u is it i o n of th e l i ­ b ra ry ’s seven-millionth volume. Before moving to Illi­ nois in 1976, Atkinson was director of libraries at Ohio State University (1971– 76), having served H u g h C. A tkin son since 1967 as assistant di­ rector for public services. Born in Chicago, Atkinson attended St. Benedict’s College, where he studied accounting and worked for Lawrence Scudder and Co. as a junior accountant (1951– 56). He studied English at the University of Chicago and in 1959 re­ ceived his M LS from Chicago’s Graduate Library School, at the same time working as an assistant in rare books at the university library. Atkinson served as reader services librarian at Pennsylvania Military College (1958– 61); head of reference (1961– 64), acting assistant director of health sciences libraries (1966– 67), and assistant director of libraries for technical services (1964– 67) at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He was a m ember of the board of directors of the Asso­ ciation of Research Libraries and O C L C , a m em ­ ber of the editorial board for the J o u r n a l o f L ib r a r y A d m in is tr a tio n , and was active in other profes­ sional library organizations. Among his recent publications were “Automa­ tion in Austerity” (a chapter in the 1984 book A us­ terity M a n a g e m e n t in A c a d e m ic L ib r a r ie s ), “C e n ­ tralized Library Collections: A Brief for the Other Side” in the J o u r n a l o f A c a d e m ic L ib r a r ia n s h ip , and several columns in the L ib r a r y J o u r n a l’s series on technology, people and change. H e l v i B e s s e n y e i , Scandinavian collections li­ brarian at the University of California at Berkeley, died October 14 after an illness of several months. Bessenyei joined Berkeley in 1967 after receiving an M L S from the university and worked initially in the Bibliographical and Periodical Divisions of the Acquisition Department. She later became head of the Serials D e p artm e n t’s Periodical Division, refer­ ence and technical services librarian in the Natural Resources Library, and also held a joint assignment with the Education/Psychology Library and the Collection Development and Reference Services D epartm ent. Bessenyei became responsible for the Scandinavian collections in 1982.
