A p p o i n t m e n t s Herbert J. Hartsook has been appointed direc­ tor o f the South Caroliniana Library a t the Univer­ sity o f South Carolina-Colum bia. H artsook began his professional career in 1979 as an archivist at the S outh C a ro lin a D e p a rt­ m en t o f Archives, joined th e s ta f f o f th e S o u th C a ro lin ia n a L ib ra ry in 1983 as curator o f m anu­ scripts, a n d becam e the library’s curator o f m od­ ern political collections in 1991. W hile in this posi­ tio n , H a rts o o k in a u g u ­ ra te d th e E rn e s t F. H e rb e rt J. H a rtso o k H o llin g s papers p ro jec t and identified a nd negotiated the acquisition o f m any significant collections, including the papers o f B utler D errick, Jam es Edwards, Lindsey G ra­ ham, Richard Riley, M ark Sanford, a nd Jo h n West. H e also directed an extensive oral history program to do c u m e n t governm ent a nd politics in South C arolina a nd participated in outreach efforts to encourage the scholarly study o f the M o d e rn Po­ litical C ollections’ holdings.
