P e t e r s o n , associate librarian at the University of Virginia, has accepted an appointment as dean of library affairs at South­ ern Illinois Universi­ ty-Carbondale. He is to assume the position M arch 1. In his new job, Peterson will di­ rect S IU -C ’s Morris Library, one of the nation’s largest re­ search libraries with holdings that exceed 1.8 million volumes. He will replace Ralph M cCoy, library dean for the past twenty K enneth G. Peterson years. Peterson, a native of Brooklyn, New York, has been at the U ni­ versity o f Virginia L ibrary since 1968. He has administered its budget ($ 3 .5 m illion), its 2 00- person staff, business services, and physical fa­ cilities. B efore going to Virginia, Peterson was head librarian at Pacific L utheran Theological Seminary, and for thirteen years before that was a Congregational minister in Ohio and California. Peterson has a bachelor’s degree from Drew University, master’s degrees from Yale U niver­ sity and the University o f California, and a P h.D . in librarianship from the University of California. He is th e author of a 205-page his­ tory o f,th e University o f California Library— published by the U C Press from his dissertation — as well as works on bibliography and librari­ anship for theological trainees. He is editor and chairman o f the A C R L pub­ lications in librarianship board and is a board member of the Southeastern Library Associa­ tion and the Virginia Library Association. W hen contacted by the editors of C &R L News, Mr. Peterson stated that he hopes to up­ hold and build upon the strong library devel­ oped at Carbondale under the leadership of D ean McCoy. He will be involved with library building expansion plans in the immediate fu ­ ture and hopes to m aintain close relations with the library staff. T h o m a s A. O r l a n d o has been appointed special collections librarian of the Chicago P u b­ lic Library. “His appointment as the L ibrary’s first trained antiquari­ an indicates the im­ portance the Chicago Public L ibrary places on its growing collec­ tions of rare books and other valuable lit­ erary m aterials,” said Chief Librarian David L . R eich in announc­ ing Mr. Orlando’s ap­ pointment. “As a clas­ sics scholar as well as a librarian, Mr. Orlan­ T hom as A. Orlando do is well prepared to give the L ibrary’s many gifts the informed care that donors have a right to expect.” Mr. Orlando was awarded the bachelor of arts degree with distinction by the University of Virginia in 1971 and earned a master of arts degree in L atin there two years later. He re­ ceived the master of arts degree in librarianship from the University o f Chicago in 1975. He also attended the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome in 1 9 6 9 -7 0 . His lan­ guages are Latin, ancient Greek, and French. Mr. Orlando’s experience includes work as the assistant to the curator of the R are Book Departm ent of the Alderman Library, U niver­ sity of Virginia (Sep t. 197 3 -S ep t. 1 9 7 4 ), as an assistant in the Main Reading Room at the Newberry Library (S ep t. 1 9 7 4 -O ct. 1 9 7 5 ), and as a part-tim e assistant in humanities reference at the Joseph Regenstein Library, University of Chicago (Ja n .-O c t., 1 9 7 5 ). H e taught L atin and English while in V ir­ ginia, has published in the antiquarian field, and is known in rare book circles for his work. He is a m em ber of th e Special Libraries Asso­ ciation.
