A p p o i n t m e n t s Kathy Crowe, associate dean, has been named interim dean of university libraries at the Uni- versity of North Carolina-Greensboro. Hana Kim has been appointed director of the East Asian Library at the University of Toronto. Kim rejoins the University of Toronto Libraries from the University of British Columbia (UBC), where she served as head of their Asian Library. Prior to her role at UBC, Kim was the Korean Studies librarian at the University of Toronto’s East Asian Library for 11 years. Mary Markland is now the head librarian for the Guin Library at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. Dave Richards has been appointed dean of the Dr. C. C. and Mabel L. Criss Library at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Richards pre- viously served as head of special collections and archives at Missouri State University and as special collections librarian at the University of Southern Mississippi. While in Missouri, he served two three-year terms on the board of trustees for the Springfield-Greene County Library District. He also served on the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board (2003–15) and has served on the board of directors for the Johnson Library and Museum in Osceola, Missouri, since 2011. Keli Rylance has been appointed head of univer- sity archives and special collections at the Kansas State University Libraries in Manhattan, Kansas. Cindy Belden is now senior cataloging librarian at the Angelo State University Library. John Dorr was promoted to head of digital scholarship services at the Northwestern Uni- versity Libraries. Previously, Trainer was associate university librarian at Yale University and direc- tor of technical and automated services at New York University. Deaths Robert J. “Bob” Havlik, 90, director emeritus of the Architecture and Engineering libraries at the University of Notre Dame, passed away on February 29, 2016. Havlik joined the library fac- ulty at Notre Dame in 1973 and retired in 1992. He was also the founding director of the Nova University (now Nova Southeastern University) Library in Davie, Florida. Havlik was previously a librarian at Purdue University, Iowa State Univer- sity, and Union Carbide in Buffalo, New York. He was also a library specialist for the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in Washing- ton, D.C. While in Washington, he also served as president of the Abraham Lincoln Group of the District of Columbia. He was coauthor of the book Argon, Helium and the Rare Gases, as well as author of numerous periodical articles and book reviews on engineering, the history of science and Abraham Lincoln. He also gave lec- tures on Abraham Lincoln, astronomy, and other topics, including the Chicago World’s Fair. Retirements Rachael Naismith, assistant director for infor- mation and research at Babson Library, Spring- fi eld College, Massachusetts, is retiring. Naismith joined the library staff in 1995 as senior reference librarian and was subsequently promoted to assistant director. One of her accomplishments was overseeing the merging of the reference and circulation departments into the existing public services department. Previously, Naismith was head of reference at the University of Missouri- Kansas City, reference librarian at Carnegie Mellon University, and reference librarian/ cataloger at SUNY-Binghamton (now Bingham- ton University). Naismith published articles on wide-ranging topics, including service to migrant farmworkers, federated searching, library pub- lications, usability testing, and library jargon. Karin A. Trainer, university librarian at Princ- eton University for 20 years, has announced plans to retire at the end of the academic year. Trainer, who worked as a librarian in the Catalog Department at the university’s Firestone Library (1972–78) before returning to Princeton as university librarian in 1996, has overseen signifi - cant developments in the library system.
