East C o n g r e s s w i l l hence-

f o r t h publish a part of 
its annual report in quarterly instead of 
annual f o r m f o r the convenience of members 
of Congress, officers of government, and the 
scholarly w o r l d generally. T h e new Quar-
terly Journal of Current Acquisitions, the 
first issue of which appeared in the fall, w i l l 
describe the more important additions to 
the library's collections during each three-
month period. 

T h e Y a l e University L i b r a r y , B e r n a r d 
Knollenberg, librarian, has received as a 
g i f t f r o m M r . W i l l i a m O d o m a collection 
of more than 2600 volumes on Italian t r a v -
els, letters, and memoirs pertaining to I t a l y 
in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nine-
teenth centuries. 

T h r o u g h the generosity of M r . W i l l i a m 
S. M a s o n , Y a l e University has been able 
to acquire f o r its library 138 items f r o m 
the A l e x a n d e r Biddle papers, including 13 
F r a n k l i n letters and documents, 17 letters 
of John A d a m s , 5 of B e n j a m i n Rush, 1 each 
of T h o m a s Jefferson and T h o m a s Paine, 
and 91 Jonathan W i l l i a m s items. 

T h e Y a l e U n i v e r s i t y L i b r a r y has re-
ceived the papers of the late F r a n k L . P o l k 
as a g i f t f r o m M r s . P o l k and her f a m i l y . 
M r . P o l k w a s Secretary of State f r o m July 
I, 1919, to June 5, 1920, and head of the 
A m e r i c a n delegation to the peace confer-
ence in 1919. A n o t h e r collection of the same 
p e r i o d — t h e papers of G o r d o n A u c h i n c l o s s — 
has been given to the library by M r s . 
Auchincloss. H e w a s also w i t h the peace 
conference in 1919. T h e s e collections are 
valuable additions to the Y a l e papers of 
C o l o n e l E . M . H o u s e and w i l l be incor-
porated w i t h them in the library. 

A friends of the library group called L i -
brary Associates has been f o r m e d at H a v e r -
ford C o l l e g e . M e m b e r s are to have the 
special privileges of the library and w i l l re-
ceive the Bulletin f r o m H a v e r f o r d C o l l e g e ' s 
T r e a s u r e R o o m .

seen three notable ad-
ditions to the manuscript collection at the

University of V i r g i n i a library. T h e s e are 
11 J e f f e r s o n - C a r r l e t t e r s ; 25 J e f f e r s o n - C o s -
w a y l e t t e r s ; a t w o - w a y correspondence be-
tween M a r i a C o s w a y and J e f f e r s o n ; and 
over 200 Jefferson letters in the papers of the 
Randolph family of " E d g e h i l l , " A l b e m a r l e 
C o u n t y , V i r g i n i a . T h e last collection num-
bers about 7000 items. 

T h e Joint University L i b r a r i e s , N a s h -
ville, T e n n . , A . F . K u h l m a n , director, have 
received on deposit the records of the T e n -
nessee H i s t o r i c a l Records Survey. T h e s e 
include much unpublished manuscript ma-
terial collected in connection w i t h the in-
ventory of county archives and church rec-
ords. T h e y include also the remaining stock 
of the publications prepared and distributed 
by the survey. 

T h e library of the W o m a n ' s C o l l e g e of 
the University of N o r t h C a r o l i n a , G u y R . 
L y l e , librarian, has received a special ap-
propriation f o r a year's project to organize 
and develop the college archives and pub-
lications as a separate college collection. 
T h e appropriation enables the library to de-
vote the time of one full-time staff member 
to this w o r k . 

T h e library of the W o m a n ' s C o l l e g e of 
the University of N o r t h C a r o l i n a has re-
ceived a special g i f t fund f r o m M r s . Julius 
I. F o u s t , w i f e of the president emeritus of 
the college, f o r the purchase of the famous 
L o u i s O r r Etchings of North Carolina. 
O r r is one of t w o A m e r i c a n s whose w o r k s 
are in the L o u v r e , the other artist being 
W h i s t l e r , represented by the portrait of his 
mother.

T h e library consists of approximately 19,000 
volumes of v i r t u a l l y complete sets of peri-
odicals in the fields of chemistry and science

and about 2,500 volumes of chemical books 
and pamphlets. T h e collection w a s brought 
together by the late Samuel C . H o o k e r , of 
Brooklyn. 

In O c t o b e r the K a n s a s State C o l l e g e li-
brary received f r o m the heirs of A b b y L . 
M a r l a t t a collection of 5000 items in the 
field of home economics. M i s s M a r l a t t w a s 
a daughter of the first principal of B l u e -
mont C o l l e g e , which later became K a n s a s 
C i t y C o l l e g e , and w a s the first director of 
home economics at the University of W i s -
consin. T h e collection is distinguished f o r 
the large number of early cook books, of 
which there are about 600, some published 
as early as the sixteenth century. 

T h e L i b r a r i e s A d v i s o r y Committee at the 
U n i v e r s i t y of M i c h i g a n in an effort to pro-
vide benefactors w i t h an informal report on 
the special collections in the university li-
brary has begun publication of the Quarto, 
" a news sheet for the dissemination of in-
teresting information about books, manu-
scripts, newspapers, maps, and print." F o u r 
issues of the Quarto have appeared to date. 
It w i l l be sent f r e e to those interested.

A collection of his-
W est torical, economical, 

legal, scientific, and 
literary material pertaining to the republics 
of Colombia and V e n e z u e l a and including 
many rare items, has recently been acquired 
by the B a n c r o f t L i b r a r y of the University of 
C a l i f o r n i a , H a r o l d L . Leupp, librarian. T h e 
collection consists of about 4000 volumes 
comprising monographs, sets, periodicals, and 
pamphlets; it includes also more than 17,000 
issues of official newspapers (covering the 
period 1 8 2 1 - 1 9 3 1 ) including an 80 per cent 
complete file of the very rare Graceta de 
Colombia, 1821-31. T h e collection w a s as-
sembled over a period of years by M r . T h e o 

H . C r o o k while w o r k i n g in South A m e r i c a 
as a petroleum engineer. 

A committee of C a l i f o r n i a college presi-
dents under the chairmanship of D r . A y m e r 
Hamilton, president of Chico State C o l l e g e , 
is preparing a new classification and pay 
scheme f o r state college librarians. 

O n N o v e m b e r 4 the librarians of the 
Pacific N o r t h w e s t met in Seattle to w o r k 
out a program of f u t u r e library specializa-
tion. T h e first session w a s devoted to a 
consideration of the pros and cons of re-
gional library specialization and the second 
to the allocation of special fields. P r a c t i -
cally every administrator present mentioned 
one or more subjects which he expected to 
emphasize in f u t u r e purchases, and a num-
ber indicated a willingness to undertake new 
responsibilities. T h e conference promises to 
have a profound influence upon f u t u r e li-
brary development in the Pacific N o r t h w e s t .

consultant in the reorganization of the

N a c i o n a l M a y o r de San M a r c o s . A f t e r 
leaving P e r u M r s . Cunningham spent sev-
eral w e e k s surveying medical and special li-
braries in B o g o t a , Colombia, and in M e x i c o 
C i t y . T h e trip w a s under the auspices of 
the R o c k e f e l l e r Foundation.
