College and Research Libraries B y M A U R I C E H . S M I T H The Selection of Chemical Engineering Periodicals in College Libraries Mr. Smith is librarian of the Aeronautical Archives of the Institute of the Aeronauti- cal Sciences, Inc. His paper is a com- pression of a master's essay accepted at the School of Library Service, Columbia Uni- versity, in 1942 and exemplifies one of the two series described in Miss Fay's article on pages 207-16. H e points o u t t h a t : T h e institute does not desire to set up any hard and fast limits on the scope and char- acter of the curriculum, nor on the relative amounts of time that should be devoted to the several groups of studies which w i l l make up a satisfactory course of instruction in chemical engineering. T h e committee has, however, made a c a r e f u l analysis on sev- eral occasions of the content of such courses in the more widely recognized curricula. T h e f o l l o w i n g distribution of time is typ- ical of programs which produce an effective composite f o r the instruction of well-pre- pared graduates f r o m schools offering a' f o u r - y e a r undergraduate course in chemical engineering.2 T A B L E I Distribution of T i m e in Representative Chemical Engineering C u r r i c u l a P e r C e n t Chemistry 25-30 Chemical Engineering 20-15 O t h e r Engineering 12 M a t h e m a t i c s 12 Physics 8 Mechanics 6 O t h e r Sciences 2 C u l t u r a l Subjects 15 T h u s , as s h o w n in T a b l e I, the distri- b u t i o n of time in representative chemical e n g i n e e r i n g c u r r i c u l a a l l o w s c h e m i s t r y 25 to 30 per cent, c h e m i c a l e n g i n e e r i n g 2 0 to 1 5 per cent, and these, t o g e t h e r w i t h addi- 2 Newman, op. cit., p. 22-23.
