H o w e v e r , the v a r i a t i o n in s c h o o l s represented f r o m y e a r t o year is so g r e a t that it is d i f f i c u l t t o a r r i v e at a c c u r a t e c o n c l u s i o n s . S i n c e the present analyst had p r e v i o u s l y p r e p a r e d a s u m m a r y o f the 1 9 3 7 - 3 8 c o l l e g e a n d u n i - v e r s i t y figures, he w a s interested in c o m - p a r i n g the r e t u r n s f o r that y e a r w i t h the present data. I n o r d e r t o g i v e s o m e v a - l i d i t y t o the c o m p a r i s o n s , o n l y those s c h o o l s w e r e c o n s i d e r e d w h i c h s u p p l i e d i n f o r m a - tion in b o t h 1 9 3 8 and 1 9 4 7 . F r o m a s t u d y o f the a b o v e s c h o o l s , it appears that a l t h o u g h the t o t a l e d u c a t i o n a l b u d g e t s in all types o f c o l l e g e s h a v e in- creased, the p e r c e n t a g e a l l o t t e d t o the li- b r a r y is d e c r e a s i n g . T h e a v e r a g e l i b r a r y a p p r o p r i a t i o n has n e v e r been l a r g e e n o u g h . A f u r t h e r selective s t u d y w a s m a d e o f the salaries o f the chief l i b r a r i a n s f o r those i n s t i t u t i o n s represented in the s u m m a r i e s f o r 1 9 3 8 , 1 9 4 6 , and 1 9 4 7 . T h o m p s o n h a v e r e c e n t l y presented e x c e l - l e n t c r i t i c a l articles o n l i b r a r y statistics, it h a r d l y seems p r o f i t a b l e t o p o i n t o u t specific instances o f the i n a d e q u a c i e s o f the present data. P r o s p e c t i v e users o f these figures, h o w e v e r , s h o u l d be w a r n e d that it w o u l d be u n p r o f i t a b l e and u n r e l i a b l e t o c o m p a r e ( f r o m year t o y e a r ) the m e d i a n s o r the e x t r e m e s in any o f the g r o u p s .
