A n u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e n a t u r e of this role, I be- lieve, w i l l be e x t r e m e l y u s e f u l t o t h e l i b r a r i a n of t h e n o t t o o d i s t a n t f u t u r e . A high p e r c e n t a g e in any g r o u p of p r o f e s s i o n a l l i b r a r i a n s w o u l d be able to i n v e s t i g a t e w i t h the n e c e s s a r y in- telligence and skill t h e a u t h e n t i c i t y of a given s t a t e m e n t o r q u o t a t i o n in a book. F r o m 75 t o go p e r cent w o u l d k n o w h o w to go a b o u t such a t a s k . B u t if you w e r e t o ask t h a t s a m e g r o u p a q u e s t i o n a b o u t the a u t h e n t i c i t y of a given p i c t o r i a l s t a t e m e n t of f a c t , f o r instance, a p o r t r a i t or an h i s t o r i c a l e v e n t o r a m a n u f a c t u r i n g process, t h e p e r c e n t a g e of p e r s o n s c a p a b l e of even s t a r t i n g o u t intelli- g e n t l y to a n s w e r such a q u e s t i o n w o u l d be v e r y l o w , p e r h a p s 3 o r 5 p e r cent. T h e r e a s o n f o r this is, of c o u r s e , t h a t u n t i l r e l a - tively r e c e n t l y w o r d s h a v e played a v e r y m u c h m o r e i m p o r t a n t role t h a n p i c t u r e s . B u t t h a t is n o l o n g e r t r u e t o d a y . I t w o u l d be easy to p r o v e s t a t i s t i c a l l y , o r in m a n y o t h e r w a y s , t h a t p i c t u r e s play a l a r g e r role in o u r lives and in o u r books a n d o t h e r p r i n t e d m a t t e r , t h a n they e v e r did b e f o r e . T h i s is p r i m a r i l y d u e t o the i n v e n t i o n of p h o t o g r a p h y . I t is only a question of time, in m y opinion, u n t i l t h e s e f a c t s w i l l be c l e a r l y and g e n e r a l l y recognized and t a k e n i n t o c o n s i d e r a t i o n by those c o n c e r n e d w i t h t h e p r o f e s s i o n a l ac- c o m p l i s h m e n t s and skills of t h e w e l l - e d u c a t e d l i b r a r i a n in t h e r e s e a r c h l i b r a r y . T h e h i s t o r y of p h o t o g r a p h y h a s been c u l t i - v a t e d , b o t h h e r e and a b r o a d , by a limited n u m b e r of specialists and s o m e a t t e m p t s at p o p u l a r i z a t i o n of t h e t h e m e h a v e been m a d e . B e a u m o n t N e w h a l l ' s n e w History of Photography is a p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t e l l i g e n t and u s e f u l as w e l l as a t t r a c t i v e s t a t e m e n t . T h e book is based on t w o e a r l i e r s t u d i e s by t h e a u t h o r , one a c a t a l o g of an exhibition held a t t h e M u s e u m of M o d e r n A r t in 1937, t h e o t h e r a second, revised edition in 1938.
