Infernal Machines T o denigrators of the f u t u r e possibilities of any and all information processing machines, the following passage from the Library Journal of September 1877 (v.2 no. 1, p . 33-34) m i g h t be a n a p p r o p r i a t e reminder. . . J . C. Rowell, L i b r a r i a n at the C a l i f o r n i a University, writes: T have been thinking of introducing in our library the type-writing machine, for use in catalogu- ing. T h e enclosed card is one which one of our professors took h o m e with him to see " h o w it would w o r k " (the professor has a type-writer, a n d d i d the j o b himself). Per- haps other librarians have tried this p l a n . H o w has it worked?' " T h e President ( J u s t i n Winsor) stated that he h a d seen some work done on the type-writer, a n d he d i d not a p p r o v e of it. H e thought that the heliotype process would d o better work . . . " M r . Bowker: ' T h e r e was a type-writer exhibited in the R u s s i a n D e p a r t m e n t at the Centennial E x h i b i t i o n , which was m u c h superior to the American, especially in accuracy, b u t perhaps not so fast.' " I t was stated that the American type-writer h a d recently been very m u c proved, a n d many difficulties obviated. " T h e President: 'I have experimented some with type-writers a n d electric f never succeeded in getting any satisfactory work.' " M r . Dewey h a d tried the electric pen, a n d h a d been satisfied sufficiently to o o n e . " Lest the President b e thought remiss in his imagination, it is only fair to that the same issue reports his m e n t i o n i n g a new material for b i n d i n g b o o k s — t ck- r a m . By 1885, the question of using the infernal machines in libraries h a d cha? ^ed completely from " w h e t h e r ? " to "which one?."
