St. Jude novena ST. JUDE NOVENA PRAYER BOOK Imprimi Potest Very Rev. Joseph Puigvi, C.M.F. Provincial Sup. Nihil Obstat Very Rev. John McMahon Censor Imprimatur + Samuel Cardinal Stritch Archbishop of Chicago May 10, 1954 NATIONAL SHRINE OF ST. JUDE MAIL ADDRESS: 221 West Madison Street Chicago 6, Illinois Who is St. Jude? The origins of devotion to St. Jude as the patron of desperate or hopeless cases are nearly as obscure as details of the life of the great Apostle. These origins seem to have been a spontaneous rising of interest among the faithful themselves, prompted possibly by the fact that according to Sacred Tradi- tion, St. Jude was a near relative, a **cousin*' of Jesus and that as a child, he was a play- mate of the God-man. Confusion of the names of St. Jude and the traitor, Judas, effectively discouraged devotion to the saint for many centuries. Devotion to him, consequently, has been of relatively recent origin although there is evidence that this devotion was held in high esteem during the Middle Ages. Impetus to this devotion was undoubtedly given by Our Lord Himself Who, in a vision, directed St. Bridget of Sweden to turn to St. Jude with great faith and con- fidence. 'In accordance with his surname, "Thaddeus” — the amiable, loving’’ said Our Lord, "he will show himself most will- ing to give help.” 1 The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the twelve. These two together with two other brothers (one St. Simeon of Jerusalem) are described by St. Matthew (13:55) as the '"brethren” of Jesus. In the Hebrew language, the word "brethren” indicates a near re- lationship. We are told that St. Jude’s father, Cleo- phas, was murdered because of his forth- right and outspoken devotion to the risen Christ. Mary Cleophas, the mother of St. Jude and St. James the Less, was a cousin of the Virgin Mary. After her death, mir- acles were attributed to her intercession. St. Jude, is shown, traditionally, as carry- ing the image of Jesus in his hand. This represents, according to tradition — our principal source of knowledge of the saint — the imprint of the Divine Countenance that was entrusted to him by Our Lord. The circumstances were these: King Aba- garo of Edessa, who suffered from leprosy, sent word to Jesus asking Him to come and cure him. With his request, we are told, the King sent an artist to return with a picture of the Master. Impressed with his great faith. Our Lord pressed His Image on a cloth and gave it to 2 St. Jude to bring to the King of Edessa and cure him. The King was cured by St. Jude and to- gether with most of his subjects was con- verted to Christianity. After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude travelled throughout Mesopotamia for a period of ten years preaching and converting many to Christianity. He probably returned to Jerusalem for the Council of the Apostles and then, he and St. Simon visited Libya and Persia where many more converts were made. St. Jude died a martyr’s death. Tradition tells us that he was clubbed, possibly into insensibility, and his head was then shat- tered with a broad ax. Sometimes after his death, St. Jude’s body was brought to Rome and placed in a crypt in St. Peter’s Basilica. A Novena A novena is a devotion performed for nine consecutive days or nine other con- secutive periods. To make a novena with greater fruit one should go to Confession, hear Mass, and receive Holy Communion. One should also have great confidence in God and in the intercession of the Saint in whose honor the novena is made. 3 Novena Prayers to St. Jude COME HOLY GHOST Come Holy Ghost, Creator blest, And in our hearts take up Thy rest; Come with Thy grace and heavenly aid. Prayer in Affliction O St. Jude Thaddeus, thou relative of Jesus Christ, thou glorious apostle and martyr, renowned for thy virtues and mira- cles, faithful and prompt intercessor of all 17 who honor thee and trust in thee! Thou art a powerful patron and helper in griev- ous afflictions. I come to thee and entreat thee from the depths of my heart; come to my aid with thy powerful intercession, for thou hast received from God the privilege to assist with thy manifest help those who almost despair of all hope. Look down upon me; my life is a life of crosses, my days are days of tribulation, and my heart is an ocean of bitterness. All my paths are strewn with thorns and scarcely one moment passes, but is witness of my tears and sighs. And withal, my soul is enveloped in darkness; disquietude, discouragement, mistrust, yes, sometimes even a kind of despair preys upon my soul. Divine Providence seems lost to my sight, and faith seems to falter in my heart. Overwhelmed by these thoughts, I see myself surrounded by a dark cloud. Thou canst not forsake me in this sad plight. I will not depart from thee until thou hast heard me. Oh! hasten to my aid. I will be grateful to thee all my life. I will honor thee as my special patron, I will thank God for the graces bestowed upon thee, and will propagate thy honor accord- ing to my power. Amen. 18 Saint Jude Thaddeus, Apostle PRAYER O glorious Saint Jude Thaddeus, by those sublime prerogatives, wherewith thou wast ennobled in thy lifetime, namely, thy kin- ship with our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh, and thy vocation to be an Apostle; by that glory which now is thine in heaven as the reward of thine apostolic labors and thy martyrdom: obtain for us from the Giver of every good and perfect gift all the graces whereof we stand in need in order to treasure up in our hearts the divinely inspired doctrines which thou hast transmitted to us in thy Epistle; that is to say, to build our edifice of perfection upon our most holy faith, praying by the grace of the Holy Spirit; to keep ourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of Jesus Christ unto eternal life; to strive by all means to help them that go astray; exalting thus the glory and majesty, the dominion arid power of Him who is able to keep us without sin and to present us spotless with exceeding joy at the coming of our divine Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. An indulgence of 300 days. A plenary indulgence on the usual con- ditionSf if these prayers are said with devo- tion every day for a month. (S.C. Ind. Aug. 17, 1908, S.P. Ap., Feb. 21, 1933.) 19 The Epistle of St. Jude The time of the writing of this epistle is un- certain. From Verse 17 it may he inferred that at the time few of the Apostles were living except St. John. St. Jude inveighs against the heresies and immorality of the Simonians, Nicolaites and Gnostics. He exhorts the faithful to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the Saints. Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James: to them that are beloved in God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called. 2. Mercy unto you, and peace, and charity be fulfilled. 3. Dearly beloved, taking all care to write unto you concerning your common salvation, I was under a necessity to write unto you: to beseech you to contend earnestly for the faith once de- livered to the saints. 4. For certain men are secretly entered in (who were written of long ago unto this judgment), ungodly men, turning the grace of our Lord God into riotousness, and denying the only sovereign Ruler, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5. I will therefore admonish you, though ye once knew all things, that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, did after- wards destroy them that believed not: 6. And the angels who kept not their princi- pality, but forsook their own habitation. He hath reserved under darkness in everlasting chains, unto the judgment of the great day. 7. As Sodom and Gomorrha, and the neighbor- ing cities, in like manner, having given themselves to fornication, and going after other flesh, were made an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire. 20 8. In like manner these men also defile the flesh, and despise dominion and blaspheme majesty. 9. When Michael the archangel, disputing with the devil, contended about the body of Moses, he durst not bring against him the judgment of rail- ing speech, but said: The Lord command thee. 10. But these blaspheme whatever things they know not: and what things soever they naturally know, like dumb beasts, in these they are corrupted. 11. Woe unto them, for they have gone in the way of Cain: and after the error of Balaam they have for reward poured out themselves, and have perished in the contradiction of Core. 12. These are spots in their banquets, feasting together without fear, feeding themselves, clouds without water, which are carried about by winds, trees of the autumn, unfruitful, twice dead, plucked up by the roots. 13. Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own confusion; wandering stars, to whom the storm of darkness is reserved for ever. 14. Now of these Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying: Behold, the Lord com- eth with thousands of His saints. 15. To execute judgment upon all, and to re- prove all the ungodly for all works of their un- godliness, whereby they have done ungodly, and of all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against God. 16. These are murmurers, full of complaints, walking according to their own desires, and their mouth speaketh proud things, admiring persons for gain's sake. 17. But you, my dearly beloved, be mindful of the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 18. Who told you, that in the last time there should come mockers, walking according to their own desires in ungodlinesses. 19. These are they, who separate themselves, sensual men, having not the Spirit. 20. But you, my beloved, building yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. 21. Keep yourselves in the Love of God, wait- ing for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto life everlasting. 22. And some indeed reprove, being judged: 23. But others save, pulling them out of the fire. And on others have mercy, in fear, hating also the spotted garment which is carnal. 24. Now to him who is able to preserve you without sin, and to present you spotless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, To the only God our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory and magnificence, empire and power, before all ages, and now, and for all ages of ages. Amen. 22 The Way of the Cross An Act of Contrition O my God, my Redeemer, behold me here at Thy feet. From the bottom of my heart I am sorry for all my sins, because by them I have oiBFended Thee, Who are infinitely good. I will die rather than ofiend Thee again. The First Station Jesus is Condemned to Death V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how Pilate condemned the innocent Jesus to death, and how thy Redeemer submitted to this sentence, to free thee from the sentence of everlasting death. O Jesus! I thank Thee for this Thy great love, and I beseech Thee to take back the sentence of everlasting death which I have deserved by my sins, so that I may be made worthy to attain to everlasting life. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us! The Second Station Jesus is made to bear His Cross V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. 23 Consider how Jesus took upon His shoulders the cross which thy many sins made so heavy. O Jesus! grant me the grace not to make Thy cross heavier by new sins, and cheerfully to carry my cross in a true spirit of penance. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Third Station Jesus Falls the First Time V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how Jesus, overcome by weariness and pain, fell to the ground under the weight of the cross. O Jesus! my falls into sin caused Thee this fall. Grant that I may never renew Thy pain by a relapse into mortal sin. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Fourth Station Jesus Meets His Blessed Mother V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider the anguish which filled the hearts of Jesus and Mary at this sorrowful meeting. It was thy sins that caused the Son and the Mother this affliction. O Jesus! excite in me, through the intercession of Thy holy Mother, a lively sorrow for my sins, that I may bewail them my whole life long, and in the hour of death find favor with Thee. 24 Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Fifth Station The Cross is laid on Simon of Cyrene V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how the Jews, seeing that Jesus was no longer able to drag His cross along, compelled Simon of Cyrene to carry it after Him. O Jesus! I ought to carry the cross, because I have sinned. Give me the grace at least to accom- pany Thee on the way to Calvary, and for the love of Thee cheerfully to bear the cross of adver- sities. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Sixth Station Veronica Wipes the Face of Jesus V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how this woman tried to alleviate the sufferings of Jesus, and how He rewarded her by leaving the print of His sacred face on the towel she had in her hands. O Jesus! grant me the grace to cleanse my soul from all its defilements and imprint deep in my heart and mind the image of Thy holy sufferings. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. 25 The Seventh Station Jesus Falls the Second Time V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider the sufferings Jesus endures in this second fall. Thou hast been the cause of them, by thy frequent relapses into sin. O Jesus! I stand before Thee full of shame. Give me the grace so as to arise from my sins, so as never again to fall back into them. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Eighth Station Jesus Speaks to the Women of Jerusalem V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how Jesus exhorts these women to weep, not for Him, but for themselves; thus He teaches thee to weep more for thy sins and folly than for His sufferings. O Jesus! give me tears of true contrition, that the sorrow I feel for Thy sufferings may be profit- able to me. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Ninth Station Jesus Falls the Third Time V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. 26 Consider how Jesus falls the third time, endur- ing excruciating pain, to atone for thy obstinacy in continually committing new sins. O Jesus! now I am firmly resolved to give up sin forever so as not to cause Thee new suffering. Strengthen me in this my resolution, and by Thy grace make it ejOEicacious. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Tenth Station Jesus is Stripped, and Receives Gall to Drink V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider the shame Jesus endured in being stripped of His garments, and the bitterness of the wine mixed with myrrh and gall, which they caused Him to drink. Thus He atoned for thy immodesty, and thy intemperance in eating and drinking. O Jesus! I am sorry for all the sins I have com- mitted by sensuality. I promise, with Thy assist- ance, not to renew Thy shame and suffering, and to live henceforth in modesty and temperance. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Eleventh Station Jesus is Nailed to the Cross V We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider the dreadful sufferings Jesus endured, when the Jews stretched His bleeding body on 27 the cross, and fastened it thereon, with nails through His sacred hands and feet. O Jesus! Thou sufFeredst all this for me; and should I suffer nothing for Thee.^ Fasten my obstinate will to Thy cross. I firmly resolve never more to offend Thee, and for love of Thee to suffer everything. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Twelfth Station Jesus Dies on the Cross V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how Jesus, after three hours agony, dies on the cross for thy salvation. O Jesus! since Thou hast sacrificed Thy life for me, it is but just that I should spend the rest of my life for Thee. And this I firmly propose to do. Only grant me, by the merits of Thy death, the grace to put my resolution in practice. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Thirteenth Station Jesus is Taken Doum from the Cross V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider the grief of the Mother of God, when she receives in her arms the Body of her divine Son, lifeless, cold and stained with blood. O most holy Virgin, obtain for me the grace never more to crucify Jesus afresh by new sins, 28 but by the practice of virtue to keep Him ever alive in my heart. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. The Fourteenth Station Jesus is Laid in the Sepulchre V. We adore Thee, O Christ, and we bless Thee. R. Because by Thy holy cross Thou hast re- deemed the world. Consider how the most sacred Body of Jesus was laid with the greatest reverence, in the new grave prepared for it. O Jesus! I thank Thee for all Thou hast suffered in order to redeem me; and I beseech Thee, that I may prepare myself to receive worthily, in Holy Communion, the Body which Thou hast given for me. Take up Thy abode forever in my soul. Our Father, Hail Mary, Lord Jesus crucified, etc. Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, true God and true man, God of Sanctity, God of Majesty, God Everlasting, have pity on us and upon the whole human race; now and always purify us from our sins and in- firmities with Thy Precious Blood, so that we may be able to live in Thy holy peace and charity, now and forever. Amen. 29 To Our Lady of Sorrows O most holy Virgin and Mother, whose soul a sword of grief pierced in the Passion of Thy Divine Son, and who in His glori- ous Resurrection wast filled with unending joy at His triumph, intercede for us Thy suppliants that we may become so truly par- takers in the adversities of the Church and the trials of the Supreme Pontiff that we may deserve to share in the consolations they desire, in the charity and peace of the same Christ our Lord. Amen. THE NATIONAL SHRINE and ST.
