Integration Three Assignment Integration Moreau Feb. 27, 2022 A life worth to live In my University Seminar- Philosophy class, we talk about well-being very frequently. We usually determine that a short life, but with many great moments, is better than a long life with dull moments. A balance between pleasure and pain, and by doing any extracurriculars that brings us pleasure can give us a well-lived life. Honestly, that topic still gets me confused in that area, but my definition of a life well-lived would be going through experiences that makes you a wiser and healed person. A life where you’ve been through the good, and the bad; you know the type of advice to give when someone asks for your input on something. In order for us to learn about the joys, how to find the pleasure we need to have a “happy life” we have to experience what pain feels like, or sometimes life would put us in positions where we learn how to have hope. The story from Dr.Kim has given me a reminder how sometimes we need to get stronger, and find hope. That requires a lot of patience, and that is the most difficult part in that process. Patience can be a very difficult time for many, but the way Dr.Kim obtained peace, and found a strategy to find patience and peace was through meditation. Due to his accident he has to constantly recline his wheelchair every 15 minutes in order to prevent blood pressure. He takes that time to pray and meditate that gets him closer to that peace and strength he has ( 5 minutes, Grotto- Moreau Week 6). It is very difficult to find patience, peace, or any other objective when there are a lot of distractions in our surroundings. To start off with social media on our phones and computers. Many can think that the people behind the scenes for companies like Google, YouTube, https://grottonetwork.com/make-an-impact/transform/why-does-god-allow-suffering/ Instagram, etc. have better lives than us since they have a well paid job. In all honesty they’re the ones that need to find healthy habits to find their patience/peace. Their workplaces are changing the working environment in order to help their workers find their peace, strength, etc. (Why we need to slow down our lives,by Pico Iyer- Moreau Week 1). Many worry about the troubles in the world, and how those troubles interfere with our goals and future plans. I think that many aren’t conscious that death is all around us, and that we’re afraid to live our life however we want. Coming to Notre Dame was a big decision for me and my family. It was such exciting news, and such a milestone. No matter how I leave this world I know that many of my friends and family would remember me for being that student leaving the “hood” to one of the most prestigious schools in the country. I know that how I got where I am, is by looking at the positive in the negative. Like what Sister Aletheia says, “We try to suppress the thought of death, or escape it, or run away from it because we think that’s where we’ll find happiness. But it’s actually in facing the darkest realities of life that we find light in them” (Meet the Nun who Wants You to Remember You Will Die, by Ruth Graham- Moreau Week 3). I remember when Fr. Hesburgh, “would move deans, he would move faculty members, he made a change, and he didn’t accept less than excellence. He did a lot of things that people would’ve thought as not priestly, he was entrepreneurial” (Hesburgh film, 6:20-6:32, Moreau Week 2). Through his determination Fr Hesburgh was able to change the image of Notre Dame since then, and now many across the US know that Notre Dame is a great school a student can get their education from. This gives me a lot of inspiration to make big goals in my life in order to change a part of the world that can reflect the type of motivation I had when I was young. https://ideas.ted.com/why-we-need-a-secular-sabbath/ https://ideas.ted.com/why-we-need-a-secular-sabbath/ https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/14/us/memento-mori-nun.html https://notredame.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Embed.aspx?id=10159379-7eca-4549-8581-ab9500c9ecd9 Obviously, I’m very young (and I barely became of age a few months ago) to understand my motive and purpose in this lifetime. I believe that majors are like schools, where there isn’t a perfect one, but there is one that fulfills all your needs or interests. My parents have told me from the start that they wouldn’t pressure me to pursue a career that I don’t enjoy because the outcome of that is that I won’t succeed in the courses of that major. I do know that many recommend taking a diverse group of courses to explore my interests and skills to help me eventually make a decision on what major to study in. Moreau helps with this because they say that, “Planning your career is much like planning for a trip. There are many details and decisions to make and it requires a lot of exploration and research. It’s not a one-step process” (Navigating Your Career Journey, Moreau Week 4). College is the time where many try to understand what they’re supposed to do, and basically need to figure out their future in 4 years (I do this many times). A homework assignment that gave me reassurance from Moreau is the Discernment Conversation (Discernment Conversation, Moreau Week 5). In that activity I asked my closest friend in my dorm to describe how I deal with my life, and she said that she would always see me in a good mood and that it would be very scary for her if she ever saw me crying or upset. This reminded me how well I hide my feelings (I’m not depressed) from difficult times during the school year. That’s the last thing that makes any life worthwhile, and especially mine- it includes a lot of feelings. Feelings are like chemistry. If you share them with people around you they can turn out to be your best friends, study buddies, or even develop a crush on them. Whenever those relationships develop you would understand the loyalty and respect behind them. Where my family is from, “You knew people loved you, but words never brought you to that knowledge. In the barrio, people tell you” ( Chapter 8: Jurisdiction, Moreau Week 7). That is something I’ll be https://undergradcareers.nd.edu/navigating-your-career-journey---moreau/ https://undergradcareers.nd.edu/navigating-your-career-journey---moreau/ https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yZ7hqvx-u4EuW2nlK-fRbWFiurQm1mZv_KpoeeiN4So/edit https://canvas.nd.edu/courses/41060/modules/15742 working on more overall because I want the people around me to know that I was a person who would take action for my choices, and it can show that I was very considerate.
