Integration 3 Integration 3 (Eulogy) The Life of We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of . Let us all take a moment to slow down and think about the important things in life. As Pico Iyer once said, “To me, the point of sitting still is that it helps you see through the very idea of pushing forward; indeed, it strips you of yourself, as of a coat of armor, by leading you into a place where you’re defined by something larger” (“Why we need to slow down our lives” by Pico Iyer- Moreau FYE Week One). The practice of slowing down and self reflecting may be useful to us all in reducing stress and lowering blood pressure and may perhaps delay our own inevitable funerals, especially if you suffer from hypertension. Taking a moment to slow down was something Lucy did often in order to destress and see things from a different and clearer perspective. Seeing things from a different perspective can help us to see what is really important in life and what our priorities are. Understanding one’s priorities in life, may lead to a better and less stressful life and when we are less stressed we can help reduce the stress of those around us. Furthermore, Lucy had a long and well lived life. This may lead us all to wonder, what a life well lived is. Is it how many awards we received, the type of car we drove, and how much money we made, or is it how we connect to and help those around us. In a TED talk, Pope Francis said “We don’t think about it often, but everything is connected, and we need to restore our connections to a healthy state” (“Why the only future worth building includes everyone” by Pope Francis- Moreau FYE Week Seven). A good life is not measured in how longer or short it may be, but rather in the relationships we build with those around us. Relationships are very important to the well being of a community and of the world because everything is connected. We are all connected to each other and should try to help out each other when we can. Also, getting to know new people and learning about their backgrounds is an important part of developing relationships. Lucy had developed close friendships with many people throughout her life and was always happy to meet new people and learn about their life journeys. Lucy also put a lot of careful thought into discerning the path for her life. She thought about questions such as what she values in life and what issues are important to her (Moreau FYE Week Five). Asking such questions can help us determine what we want to do with our lives and how we want to choose a career in which we can use our abilities to best serve others. Helping others was an important part of Lucy's life and she chose a profession in which she could use her skill, abilities, and what she had learned throughout life to help others. Lucy also discerned her path in life by asking herself, what brings her joy, what is she good at, and how can she help those in her community. She was also continually searching for how she can help others. Fr. Micheal Himes once said, “It’s [restlessness] https://ideas.ted.com/why-we-need-a-secular-sabbath/ https://ideas.ted.com/why-we-need-a-secular-sabbath/ https://www.ted.com/talks/his_holiness_pope_francis_why_the_only_future_worth_building_includes_everyone/transcript https://www.ted.com/talks/his_holiness_pope_francis_why_the_only_future_worth_building_includes_everyone/transcript what constantly moves us forward, makes us grow, expands our horizons, and deepens our perceptions. It’s a very healthy, a very important, and a very valuable thing! ” (“Three Key Questions” by Fr. Michael Himes- Moreau FYE Week Three). Lucy never stopped learning and growing through her life and she was always expanding her horizons. Furthermore, although she was a chemical engineering major in college, she used this knowledge to help people in other ways than just through engineering. “Contrary to popular belief, deciding on a major does not determine the rest of your life” (“Navigating Your Career Journey” by the Meruelo Family Center for Career Development - Moreau FYE Week Four). The stories of our lives do not boil down to one thing or one event. We may take many different paths throughout our lifetimes and all of them make us who we are, but we also change throughout lifes. People may change some of their careers, passions, and hobbies throughout their lives. Lucy did take some different paths throughout her life but also had some commitments and passions that remained with her throughout her life. Lucy faced some struggles in life but she always focused on the good things in her life instead of what she did not have. She was also able to see the potential for good in every situation. Even when she faced obstacles and her personal and professional lives, she still tried to stay positive and look for and acknowledge the good things in her life. She would ask “what” questions instead of “why” questions. “Why questions can draw us to our limitations; what questions help us see our potential” (“The right way to be introspective (yes, there’s a wrong way)” by Tasha Eurich - Moreau FYE Week Six). Being introspective is not always a good thing, but when done properly it can give you greater insight, a clearer sense of purpose, and greater well-being, self-acceptance, and happiness. These are all important parts of a life well lived. Also, a well lived life can inspire others to have a well lived life and to help those around them. Fr. Hesburgh inspired others because he “had an extraordinary ability to reach across lines” (“Hesburgh” by Jerry Barca and Christine O'Malley - Moreau FYE Week Two). Listening to other people’s opinions and finding common ground is an important skill. Lucy also made a point to listen to other people’s opinions and to find common ground. She was able to talk to people of all different backgrounds. Overall Lucy had a well lived life, but now it is over and done with. Hopefully we can all learn something from Lucy’s life and the attitude she had throughout life. https://canvas.nd.edu/courses/40336/files/475884/download?download_frd=1 https://canvas.nd.edu/courses/40336/files/475884/download?download_frd=1 https://undergradcareers.nd.edu/navigating-your-career-journey---moreau/ https://undergradcareers.nd.edu/navigating-your-career-journey---moreau/ https://ideas.ted.com/the-right-way-to-be-introspective-yes-theres-a-wrong-way/ https://ideas.ted.com/the-right-way-to-be-introspective-yes-theres-a-wrong-way/ https://okta.nd.edu/app/universityofnotredame_panopto_1/exk13lykiqNLbwS7H357/sso/saml?SAMLRequest=jZJRb9owEMe%2FSuT3xMEh67AAiRVNRWJdVFgf9oKc5AIWic%2F1OS18%2BznQdd1LVcmSrdPd%2Ff%2B%2FO09Jda2Vi94fzAM89UA%2BWi1nbJePvpaqKes4VeMsHotJFqu0FnHZlF%2FGaV5mopmw6BEcaTQzJpKURSuiHlaGvDI%2BhFIh4jQLZyuETCcyE0ku8t8sWgYVbZS%2FVB68tyQ5x6NXiakTqHuurOW90c9Dd3%2FGxqB3UKsOdlYZtB53Iw6n4yhrz0f9dL8uXzY3d1l%2Bw4mQD0Qs%2Bo6uggvWjDWqJRjsFYoodH2LFA49Vth%2B06bWZj9jvTMSFWmSJqiR9JXcLH6sZcCT5TWJ5N12W8TFz82WRQsicAPHLRrqO3AbcM%2B6gl8P639kb%2B6TA5KHOnmFSCrseHF9h3sPxAfDfI17bRJF9sSiU9cakpclfezOvqKw%2BXTIlpdduHf1H5ervyBs%2FhnbU%2F5O5Kpo5X3IXS0LbHV1jhZtiy%2B3DpQP4%2FauD9Pm82vZ%2F99t%2Fgc%3D&RelayState=%2FPanopto%2FPages%2FViewer.aspx%3Fid%3D10159379-7eca-4549-8581-ab9500c9ecd9&SigAlg=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2F09%2Fxmldsig%23rsa-sha1&Signature=aYXNcchFOetR1vZVAiTKNzoeHzzkRJ5H5y90B3aPCL3CloIRL3dHqd4GK%2F2DnPIYQtlilOJYbBD1rcWDYex1COz4sUgLgtpg6crRD9bvD3XSq%2FNBGQy%2F%2FOQNBVNQMttWL3r9UYYumkBaWsCc7UAKEfzmNySeNbcjZ78ExC9%2Fwka4VesB0VakvaiwGWnPd%2BYTiow6ypFc3TzWNwjr99FVJQOiUiFS7fZBiX%2F%2BwhkrlNDaR2rKhG%2FsNtExxyE1fRoOIaDtbqV8t0oavxNBND3xrvfttaQwsN9hgM0VVWGimLXuP%2BwyS1lvQmD15rJOEFTSkO9FAfUzVQ4hAHIg3%2BY5kQ%3D%3D
