Create your integration file using any tool of your choice (Word, Google Doc, etc.) and upload as a PDF to Canvas via the Week 8 Integration assignment - found within the Week 8 module. Prompt: What do I believe? For the past several weeks, you have been invited to deepen your self-knowledge as it relates to your personal development. In response, utilize and integrate the required content, your independent and critical thinking, and your in-class conversations from Weeks 1-7 to identify and describe your Root Beliefs. Root Beliefs are statements of conviction that shape your choices and priorities. These beliefs should answer “Why”: Why do you do what you do? Root Belief statements are not “I believe in...” Rather, they are "I believe that..." statements. A few potential sentence stems are: I believe that I am searching for... I believe that I forge life-giving relationships by... I believe that my purpose is to… I believe that I will grow by… I believe that I am responsible for.. I believe that I pursue the truth by... I believe that my community should… I believe that I am made to... Etc. After stating your Root Beliefs (the number of Root Beliefs may vary), describe the origins, development, challenges, and implications of each Root Belief. A few guiding questions might be: Why do you believe this? How have you come to believe this? How has this belief been challenged? How does this belief influence your actions? Remember, you are required to integrate content from each week of Weeks 1 - 7 in your response. You are also highly encouraged to include any content, resources, or other meaningful information you’ve encountered this year. Be sure to consult the boxes below for greater detail on assignment requirements. While at ND, I have been blessed enough to be near students passionate about changing the world. Everyone I have made has an overwhelming joy about being memorable, unlike anything I have seen at my high school. Compared to my high school, most of my encounters have been, for better words, dull and not as trilling at ND. With the nine weeks I have been here, I feel like I have learned more from my classmates than a professor at ND could ever teach me. It is 20x easier to be vulnerable with students and share academic and non-academic things with professors at ND. I have been vulnerable and talked about personal meaning items in my life are the times I bonded the most with students on this campus. Honestly, especially here, it is easy to be friendly with the students since the community is welcoming and willing to pull you in. I think a significant trait of ND is the students being vulnerable and so very genuine that makes talking to anyone comfortable. After being here for only nine weeks, I think I found a group of people that I think are my best friends? And people that I genuinely enjoy being around and make efforts to see. That feels strange to say since most of these people were strangers for nine weeks, but it magically came together. I think everything came together because of the friendly community at ND and not being afraid to be vulnerable. The quotes read as, "Why are we alone and vulnerable? We num vulnerability when we are waiting for the call". This quote represents an interesting take on what being vulnerable is. The women in the Ted Talk describe vulnerability as something that is a challenging task to do. Being open to others is something that is not easy to come to. I believe that I forge life-giving relationships by bonding over similar niches and hobbies I have with someone. I feel like the best way to create a conversation on campus with anyone or any person is to bond over shared interests and traits we have in common. A quote that describes ND virtues says, "We live in a culture with an atom one mentality" This quote signifies a lot from the get-go and can be relatable for us to have in our minds when thinking about our authentic self. Well, for starters, at Notre Dame, everyone is unique, memorable, and unique in their way, and with a surplus amount of that in one concentrated place (Notre Dame), it can be overwhelming. Honestly, this is becoming very true! The ND has been accepting and open-minded, which makes it way easier to integrate as a person of color, especially (at a PWI). On top of that, I pursue truth by being authentic and speaking what is on my mind. I am open to speaking what is on my mind and hearing authentic, fresh, academic perspectives that I have never heard of before in a friendly, conversational way that is always fruitful. Moreau First Year Experience Integration One Assignment Fall 2021 I believe that my purpose is to live a good life. Especially since I am taking God and the Good Life, I intend to live every day to the best of my ability. No one knows how long we will be alive and living each day, hour, second, and moment with the hope of it being the best and believing it will be good. Being proactive and assuming good things is a mindset to embody that can only benefit you. A quote from my philosophy class, God and the Good Life that will stick with me forever is, "Most of what we say and do is not essential. If you can eliminate it, you will have more time and more tranquility. Ask yourself at every moment, 'Is this necessary?' But we need to eliminate unnecessary assumptions as well. To eliminate the unnecessary actions that follow." – Marcus Aurelius. This quote is the framework for what I think everyone should live by and something I try to live by myself after learning about it. It reminds me of a quote from Week 1 where we talked about being vulnerable and being open to change and a quote I remember from watching "It helps to have a framework for life." This quote is crucial since it reminds students how helpful plans are in our crazy busy lives. Having a to-do list makes life most accessible and breaks things down into tiny pieces. Having to-do lists gives us structure in our lives and makes things less confusing. "Why are you spending so much time with Jenny?" I specifically picked this quote since it most definitely is harmful primarily for all intents and purposes. The comment that someone can most definitely say to someone else in a very, really big way in a significant way. I also believe that I am responsible for being the best version of myself that makes me happy. Taking happiness into your hands can aid in your mental health and perspective on the world and ultimately change the game. Having the intention to make your life better and the best it can be is a refreshing mindset. Furthermore, I believe that I grow by making mistakes and learning from others. But also making mistakes is a very normal thing to go through. Although failure and rejection at an academic location like ND can feel like the end of the world, it isn't. Classes like Moreau help students realize the bigger picture and help us reflect on our "ND bubble issues'' that are very microscopic so they do not become too daunting onto our lives. I believe that I am made to be the best version of myself. No one can honestly measure "the best version" of what they can be, but evolving and making mistakes in a climate like ND is typical and something we will go through. The person we are walking on ND campus to graduating and becoming an alumnus is a lot of time to change, character development that I cannot wait to experience in my next four years here!
