Gen. John M. Keane, vice chief of staff of the Army, will deliver the Commissioning Ceremony address to University of Notre Dame ROTC students at 9 a.m. May 17 (Saturday) in the Joyce Center.p. Keane is a four-star general who has commanded at every level, from company to corps. He has commanded the XVIII Airborne Corps ? the Army’s largest war fighting organization ? and has served in numerous staff positions, including chief of staff of both the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne Division, as well as chief of staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps. In addition, Keane served as a platoon leader and company commander in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division.p. A 1966 graduate of Fordham University, Keane earned his master’s degree from Western Kentucky University. His military education includes the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, five Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals.p. The three branches of the military will commission a total of 59 officers from Notre Dame’s ROTC units ? the Army, 14; the Air Force, 15; and the Navy, 30.p.
