¶ injunctions given by the reverend father in God richard by Gods providence Bishop of Elye, as well to the clergy as to the Church wardens and Inquirers of every several parish within his Dioces, to be observed and kept of every of them in their offices and callynges as to them shall appertain, for the aduancement of Gods honour, for the increase of virtue, and for good order to be continued within his said Dioces. ❧ For the clergy. IN primis, you must travail diligently & painfully to set forth gods true religion, and to adourne the same with example of godly life, being circumspectly that you offend no man either by light behaviour or uncomely apparel. Item, you shall every second Sunday & every holiday, openly in the church hear and instruct all the children and servants of both sexes within your parish, or at the least so many of them at once by course, as the time will serve, and as you may well hear and instruct, for half an hour at the least before evening prayer, in the ten commandments, the articles of the belief, and the lords prayer, and diligently examine and teach them in the catechism set forth in the book of common prayer Item, to thintent this thing may be more effectually executed, ye shall take the names of all the children and servants of both sexes in your parish, that be of convenient age and cannot say the catechism, and shall call by course certain of them by name, every second Sunday and every Holy day, to come to the catechism, whereby you may easily note & perceive what parentes or maisters and dames be negligent in sending their children and servants to be instructed, and take occasion thereof both priuyly and openly to exhort them to send their youth as they are appoynted. Item, you shall not admit to the receiving of the holy communion, any of your parish which be openly known to live in any notorious sin without repentance, or any malicious person that is out of charity, unless the same do first charitably and openly reconcile him or herself again, to the satisfaction of the congregation. Item, you shall not admit to the holy communion any of your parish, men, or women, being above twenty yeres of age, that can not say by heart the ten commandments, the articles of the faith, and the lords prayer: nor any being above twelve yeres, and under twenty yeres of age, that can not say by heart the catechism that is set forth in the book of common prayer. And you shall use to examine your parishioners at convenient times, to thintent you may know whether they can say the same which is above required. Item, you shall read openly in your church in time of divine service, twice every year, vpon some of the sundays within one month next after the feasts of Easter and saint Michael the archangel, a declaration of certain principal articles of Religion, set forth by both the Archbishoppes and the rest of the bishops of this realm for unity of doctrine. Item, you shall preach or cause to be preached in the Churches where you are Parsons or Vicars, one sermon every quarter of the year at the least. Item, none of you shall serve two cures at one time, without special licence under your Ordinaries seal. Item, no Curate shall serve any Cure within this Dioces, without special licence under your Ordinaries seal. Item, that every person, Vicar, and Curate, shall use in the time of the celebration of divine service, to wear a surplice, prescribed by the queens majesties injunctions and the book of Common prayer, and shall keep and observe all other rights and orders prescribed in the same book of Common prayer & injunctions, as well about the celebration of the sacramentes, as also in their comely and priestlyke apparel, to be worn according to the precept set forth in the book called advertisements. ¶ For the Churchwardens and Inquirers. IN primis, that all Churchwardens within the dioces of ely, shal vpon their oaths duly and truly certify in the end of every quarter of the year, from time to time, all such matters as hereafter ensue, to the chancellor or his deputy vpon some court day, and in the consistory the time of his sitting. Item, whether the queens majesties injunctions be quarterly red by the person, Vicar, or Curate. Item, whether one sermon at the least be quarterly preached in your parish church, according to the said injunctions, and by whom the same sermon is preached. Item, whether your person, Vicar, or Curate, do read once vpon some Sunday within one month next after Easter, and once vpon some Sunday within one month next after Michaelmas yearly, a declaration of certain principal articles of religion, set forth by the Archebishops and bishops of this realm for unity of doctrine. Item, whether your person, Vicar, or Curate do read vpon the sundays and holidays the Homilees set forth by public authority, where there is no sermon, and in such sort as they are appoynted to read the same in the book of the Homilees. Item, whether your person, Vicar, or Curate, do teach the youth of your parish vpon every holiday, and every second Sunday in the year, the catechism set forth in the book of public prayer. Item, to certify and present whether all fathers, mothers, maisters, and dames of your parish, cause their children and servants both mankind and womankinde, being of six yeres of age, and under twenty, which haue not learned the catechism, to come to the church every second Sunday, and every holiday at the time appoynted, and obediently to hear and be ordered by your minister, until such time as they haue learned the said catechism by heart, & what be the names of those that do not cause their children and servants so to come to the church to be instructed and examined. Item, to certify and present, whether the lay people of your parish, especially householders having no lawful excuse to be absent, do faithfully and diligently endeavour themselves to resort to their parish church or chapel on the holidays, and chiefly on the sundays to morning and evening prayer, and vpon reasonable let therof, to some usual place where Common prayer is used, and then and there abide orderly and soberly during the time of Common prayer, Homilees, preaching, and other service of God there used, and what be the names of those that negligently or wilfully absent themselves, or come very late to the church vpon the sundays and holidays, and especially vpon the sundays. Item, to certify and present the names of such of your parishioners as walk, talk, or otherwise vnreuerently behave themselves in the church, or use any gamyng abroad, or in any house, or sit in the streets or churchyard, or in any tavern or alehouse vpon the Sunday, or any other holiday, in the time of Common prayer, sermon, or reading of any of the Homilees. Item, to certify and present, whether the Churchwardens and sworn men haue levied and gathered of every that wilfully or negligently absenteth him or herself from their parish Church, or vnreuerently behave him or herself in the church, in the time of divine service vpon the sundays or other holidays, the forfeiture of .xii. d. for every such offence, according to a statute made in the first year of the queens majesties reign that now is, and haue put the same forfaytures to the use of the poor of that parish, & what particular sums of money are quarterly forfeited that way, and by whom and howe much therof is levied and delivered to the collectors of the poor: and if any such forfaytures be not levied in case of such offence, by whose fault it happeneth that the same are not levied, and what be the names of such as offend that way, and do not pay the said forfeiture. Item, to certify and present whether there be any Inkepers, Alewyues, Victuellers, or tipplers within your parish, that admit or suffer any person or persons in their houses, to eat and drink, to play at tables, cards, or other games, in time of common prayer, preaching, or reading of the Homilees on the sundays or holy dayes, or any Butchers, or other, that use to sell meate or other things vpon the sundays or holidays in like time of common prayer, preaching, or reading of the Homilees, and what be the names of the persons that so offend. Item, to certify and present whether you haue collectors for the poor of your parish, whether they do their duty in gathering weekly, and distributyng the alms of the poor, according to a statute made in the first year of the queens majesties reign, and make a just account therof quarterly. Item, to certify and present quarterly all such persons as be of habilitie, and do obstinately or frowardly refuse to give reasonably towards the relief of the poor, or do wilfully discourage others from so charitable a deed, and what their names be. Item, to certify at the least quarterlye all swearers & blasphemers of Gods holy name, all drunkards, adulterers, fornicators, ribauldes, incestuous persons, bawds, or receivers of such incontinent persons, or of strange women with child, whose husbands are unknown, or any persons that are vehemently suspected of such faults, or that be not of good name and famed touching such crimes and faults, and all sowers of discords between neighbour and neighbour, within your parish. Item, to certify whether any Curate presume to serve in any parish without licence from the ordinary in writing and under seal, or serve two Cures without special licence therfore: and whether any licensed to serve any Cure, do not wear at the celebration of the divine service and sacramentes a comely surplice, & observeth all other rights & orders prescribed in the book of Common prayer, and the queens majesties injunctions, & in the book of advertisements. Item, to certify whether the parish haue a Bible of their own, the book of Common prayer, a Psalter, the two books of Homylees, the book called the Paraphrases of Erasmus, or rather the common places of Musculus, and other books requisite, as injunction, the Declaration, and advertisements. Item, to certify likewise whether the quire be comely and orderly kept, whether they haue a fair & comely table for the holy Communion, with a fair linen cloth to lay vpon the same, and some coueryng of silk, buckeram, or such like, for the clean keeping therof. Item, whether the east wall of the quire be hanged with a fair cloth, and the paper of the ten commandments fastened in the myddest therof. Item, whether the table touching the degrees of matrimony, last set forth by the reverend father in God Matthew Archbishop of Canturburie, be fastened in some convenient place in the church. Item, to certify whether there be any within this Dioces that haue married within degrees of affinity or consanguinity, by the laws of God forbidden, and set forth in a table for an admonition: Any man that hath two wives, or any woman that hath two husbands, any that being divorced or separated aside, hath married again, any married that haue made precontractes, any that haue made privy or secret contracts, any that haue married without banes thrice solemnly asked, any couples married that lives not together, but slaunderouslye live a part, any that haue married out of the parish where they ought to haue the same solemnized. Item, to certify whether your ministers keep their Registers of marriages, buryalles, and christtenynges well and orderly, and to present the copy of them once a year by indenture, to the ordinary or his officers. Item, to certify whether there be any in your parish which minister the goods of those that be dead without authority, any executours that haue not fulfilled their testators will, specially in paying of legacies given to good & godly uses, as to relief of the poverty, to poor schollers, orphans, high ways, marriage of poor maidens, and such like. Item, whether there be any persons that intrude themselves and presume to exercise any kind of ministery in the church of God, without imposition of hands and ordinary authority: Or any being once priest or minister, that doth not minister, nor resort to the common prayer now used, and at times appoynted communicate: and whether any such do go and use himself like a lay man. YE shall diligently and indifferently mark all persons of your parish, which come into the church after the beginning of the service, or depart out of the church before all the service be fully ended, and tell them roundely of their faults: in case any of them will not amend, ye shall send word from time to time to your ordinary. Also ye shall demand and receive of all persons being absent from all the Morning prayer, or all evening prayer vpon the holy dayes. xii. d. to the use of the poor, yf any person refuse payment, then distrain till it be paid.
